Shameless ego boost. I studied computer music history this past semester at university and had to make a correction here:

Why Does HAL Sing ‘Daisy, Daisy’ in ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’?

Because Arthur C. Clark saw a synthesized speech demo at Bell Labs in 1962 where a computer sang that song. Kottke has a link to an audio clip. Update: Brad Smith emailed to point out that computer-music pioneer Max Mathews deserves some of the credit for that performance of “Daisy, Daisy”; it was Mathews’s arrangement, based on technology developed by Bell Labs’ John Kelly.
That is all.

Brad - that would be a great subject to take!

Have you ever used "Max"? (Originally released by Opcode and named in honour of the man you mention.)

Kudos on the mention at DF too.

IBM 7094 sings Daisy - Bell Labs 1961

IIRC, there are other reasons for a computer to sing Daisy... AFAIK, its the audio equivalent of a 'hello world' program and traditionally used as the audio icebreaker for speech apps. Seems to me I've heard of this in more than just Bell Labs (although they may have been first).

Edit: the interweb sez... Daisy was actually "the first song ever sung by a computer"... at Bell.

Wikipedia also has some more linkage, including the performer who voiced Hal's singing

All those who believe in telekinesis, raise my hand.

That's great, but my favourite perfomance by Hal was his interview with Dick Cavett (or was it Merv Griffin?) on SCTV. But carry on, carry on...

No, I haven't. I did compose a piece for the class and looked at that as an option, but instead I opted for writing my own program to generate MIDI events and then I used PlayerPRO and Audacity for further processing.
