Hi everyone,

I plan to buy an external hard drive, (I'll be using it with an iMac, will store all kinds of documents such as video, photo...)

Which brand would you suggest, Lacie or Western Digital? (Western Digital is much cheaper, but I don't know if it is reliable or not)

Thank you,,

They're both very reliable. LaCie will get you a nicer casing, but at a much higher price than a comparable WD drive.

I've seen many more drive failures on WD drives than on LaCie drives.

If anything you are better off putting your own case and drive together, that way you get what you want.

Sorry, I don't want to hijack the thread but it seemed a good time to ask - how do people rate the G-Tech drives? Reliability etc. They do seem a lot more expensive than the Lacie models.

Regards

I've always read bad reviews of Lacie drives on Apple.com. Just look. LaCie puts in last-run hard drives, it seems, because all I read about them is how they fail. Whether this is an issue with ventilation or hard drives seems a moot point. Personally, I buy an external hard drive enclosure and a Seagate drive.

That's so funny because the guys that fix my machines said that they have a ton of LaCie drives come in for service.... I'm wondering if that's not partly because of the success of LaCie in selling their machines (larger population, larger representation of dead drives).... anyway, it's an interesting question.

I have a LaCie that I've owned for a good... half a year maybe? It hasn't caused me any problems yet. At all.

Everybody will give you their opinion based on anecdotal experience. None of it really means anything. What you buy from LaCie is just a drive manufactured by Hitachi, Seagate, Maxtor, Western Digital (or whatever supplier they are using) in a LaCie case, anyway.

Yeah that's true. The last few drives I've bought have all been Western Digital and none of them have gone bad on me so far. Some are going on 5 years old now.

G-Tech drives are fast, very reliable and still have one of the best warranties in the business. I have the 500GB drive hooked to my Mac Pro.

I have a WD I like it very much, i know at costco you can get a quite pretty WD in white 1TB drive for like 300, which is quite a nice deal. I would go for the WD

Western Digital just updated their MyBook line, so you should be able to find some of the older models (the ones with the circle light/button) for cheap-ish. They've actually been going on sale at Best Buy, NewEgg, etc. for several weeks now.

LaCies are always expensive. But they look nicer

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

Go to newegg.com and search. They have great customer reviews and you can find based on price, etc.

edit: That's how I ended up with my external LaCie, but I would go by current prices and reviews, if I were buying again today.

Ugh.
