Today I decided to fix my sticking T key.

So I:
  • gently removed the key to expose the scissor mechanism
  • removed the mechanism
  • cleaned up the dust and dirt
  • sprayed the area with a bottle of canned air (there was a sizzle)
  • reassembled the mechanism

And now the T key does not work.
With the key popped back off I can press the little silicone nipple and nothing types.

Any advice?

(this was posted courtesy of the keyboard viewer mini-app in the upper right side)

Now I will attempt to reboot the machine to see what happens.

There was a sizzle?

NEVER USE CANNED AIR! It is very cold and can cause condensation when it touches your electrical bits, and then there is a sizzle. You may have fried a circuit.

I hope not.

How old is the computer?

Or use an external keyboard for two months.

That's exactly what I'll have to do. It will cost ~$500 to replace it!

Or a vacuum. An anti-static brush is the safest tool.

See, all you need now is an anti-static brush, a vacuum and a time machine, and you're all set.

Or a low-pressure air compressor.

Then, you likely wouldn't even need to take the key off. There was probably just a piece of Pirate's Booty trapped under there, although why you were rubbing your butt on the keyboard is beyond me.

But, who am I to judge?

You could just copy and paste the "t" every time you need it. That way you don't need an extra keyboard attached. Here, just to make it easier for you:

Good.

I'm glad you guys are here. I've been needing a good laugh.

Also, can you converse or inquire and never use a pesky key for which said inquiry is of?

I smell a dialogue challenge.

P.S. Since we have solved said ocean burglar's original problem, we may change ongoing dialogue as such commands. We never desire leaving Drew behind, and since he may no longer converse normally, we desire provision for his needs.

Sheesh.

Drew, I have an old(er) Apple Bluetooth shortboard keyboard (model A1314 released in October 2009) that I can mail to you on Monday, November 22 (long story), if that'll help? It's the "newer" version of that product line, requiring only two AA batteries instead of three from earlier versions.

Think about it, let me know. I can't send it for another 10 days or so (but that gives me time to find a box to put it in), but it's yours if you'd like it, if it'll help you these next few months until your new MacBook Pro arrives. Call it a loaner if you want, and send it back in January/February? Or keep it, I don't care. I won't really need it after next weekend.

Y'all are the worst and best

Thank you all!

And Paul I have abducted the wireless shortboard that I use with my Mac Mini and have been setting it atop the built-in keyboard and it's almost normal. Mind you, I'll have to limp along with this until mid-January!!!

Thank goodness I can use my phone!

Cool. It'll just make that new MacBook Pro even more awesome/welcome. Gotta have a few clouds/rain to appreciate the sunshine. Or something like that.

I may still eventually pay to have the old machine properly repaired so I can use it as a spare, but for now I will be limping into the future

The pic, with no scale/context, made me think it was something leaf blower-sized. It’s far smaller, upon reading the specs.

What about using Karabiner or something to remap an F-key to “t” on the internal keyboard? It’d suck, but at least you’d still be able to type everything even if you forget the external keyboard.
