Even if you are of legal age - even if you're taking a taxi home, or riding with a DD - you can get arrested just for being drunk.
In a bar.

Texas (Reuters) -- Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkenness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

More than 2,200 people have been arrested in Texas bars in the six months since the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission announced a crackdown on public intoxication, primarily targeting bars.
The argument that they're saving people from drunk drivers *before* they get behind the wheel seems to border on thought-crime territory. Sitting outside bars and arresting people as they walk out is bad enough, but this is pretty scary.

A couple of my friends got arrested for being intoxicated a month or two ago, but they were at a ski area and they were REALLY, REALLY drunk. They were probably making a big scene too.

This is ridiculous. I'm really lucky I live in Minnesota.

To be honest, I'm somewhat mixed on this one-

On one side, I'm thinking it a good thing in the sense that it will train people to drink more responsibly. They shouldn't have to wait until a crash or being caught to chang their behavior.

On other side, I have to agree with FFL that it's too CIA-like...

Didn't we already have laws forbidding bars from serving drinks to people who are clearly intoxicated? How well is it followed?

Perhaps getting arrested at home for having sex for any purpose other than procreation.

Maybe, but McDonald's sucks more.

It's not so much about taste quality, as it is about availability after 3 AM.

Hey now! I dig on the mcdonald's quarter pounder with cheese and fries. Probably because I used to really enjoy it when I was younger but I still like 'em even though they're really crap.

Milkshakes are the only worthwhile thing any fast-food place has to offer.

Arby's Jamocha Shakes are teh win. No question.

Heh, nearest Steak'n' Shake is 30 miles away :/ Turbulent, I'd love to visit the ancestral homeland I'd cook something if I hadn't nearly set the dorm on fire earlier this year attempting that very thing

And Mac+, I agree. A clan that can disappear for random portions out of the day is just strange
