The EU parliament has voted against software patents with an overwhelming 648:14 votes (18 abstentions). So this means no software patents for the EU, at least for now. Software that is connected to hardware (e.g., software in cars, etc.) will probably be patentable in the future. But at least the bigger problem of patents on all and everything (can you say "1-click shopping"?) seems to have been averted for good.

so what does this mean for developers? can anyone just up and steal code and call it their own? And if so, how will developers make money?

I think stealing code is still illegal but this patent would prevent 3rd party apps that rely on reverse engineering to compete.
Although I admit I have not followed this as closely as I should. |
