I'm about to grab a host for a new side project and am curious about the differences between having the site hosted on Linux servers and having it hosted on servers running Microsoft server apps. To date I've never needed any Frontpage plugins. I've taught myself to program with PHP over the last year and can only foresee playing with eCommerce apps and installing a PHP based forum, all of which are included on both the Linux and the MS servers.
POP QUIZ Is there any difference that would affect me as the end user now or in the future? What's the most common setup being used today and why? Extra points for explaining this to me with the use of boobs. |

I saw it, but backed out before reading any further in the thread as my finacée was sitting next to me.

i prefer Microsoft when I work with pages that use ASP. I believe you can do the same with Linux but I dont know how.
I prefer Linux when it comes to using software like Gallery, WordPress, and MovableType.. they simply won't work on Microsoft servers. Also Linux is cheaper. portable: MacBook 2.4Ghz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD | personal: PowerMac G5 dual 2.3ghz, 6GB RAM, 6TB HD | work: MacBook Pro 2.5ghz, 2GB RAM, 160GB HD | car: Alpine iDA-W407 with black iPod 80GB | pocket: iPhone 3GS with Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pro's |

Many PHP scripts use permissions which Windows can't handle very well. There are some tricks to setting them up, but it is much easier for Linux to handle and works with your FTP client.

What's funny is that I didn't remember posting the part about boobs and couldn't figure out what went wrong with the first few replies to my question... serves me right.
My own website is hosted on servers running Unix and I'll likely want to use a CMS like MovableType as I'm already doing, so I'll lean Linux-ward now. |

There are 2 differences that I know of.
1) windows servers need more reboots (I was told this by 2 hosting companies who hosted windows/linux and I have seen this at work with linux vx. 2003) 2) from what I have seen, you will pay more for windows hosting vs. linux hosting |
