So I bought a new Logitech Optical mouse today at Walmart for $15. Corded. My wireless one only works at extremly close range nosw, and eats batteries like hell.

Well, it tracks as slow as a turtle even on maximum tracking speed! It didn't come with a disc with any Logitech mouseware either, wich surprised me. Both my previous Logitech mice came with software.

Is this just defective, or does Logitech just suck?

did you try it on a different comp? then you can see whether it is a deffect of the product or the answer to your other question.

I've been generally happy with Logitech stuff - although I have found side scrolling on the MX1000 to be frustratingly slow.

Not sure whether or not your mouse is defective, but here a few things to try:
  • Check to see if Logitech have posted any software updates related to your mouse on their site. Both my MouseMan Traveler and MX1000 came with CDs, but I had to download the Traveler driver b/c it came supplied on a mini CD that I did not want to attempt to put in my TiPB.
  • Reboot your computer - sometimes a fresh start can help.
  • If these are no help, then perhaps check out USB Overdrive.

Let us know how things go.

Did you use fast user switching? I've found that after fast user switching to another *user* (not the login screen) and switch back to my user, it tracks slow.

If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong.

I downloaded the latest Logitech software. It was better, but still not close to the smooth, fast tracking of my current Logitech wireless (but it's going to die SOON...)

I'm going to take it back, and since I'll be down in Cincinnati next week, I'll go to Apple Store and take a look at the Mighty Mouse.

^The mouse in question. I'm going to try it one more time in a little while, and if it still is bad, it's going back.

And nope, no fast user switching. Only one user on this Mac.

It isn't the mouse, it is OS X. I have three Logitech mice, all great products. All of them track perfectly and fast in Windows. If I put any of them on OS X, they track horribly slow. I haven't tried USB Overdrive yet, but I have been told it can fix problems.

MX510, MX Duo, and the Classic.

Hmm... so it's a problem with Logitech mice and OS X?

The Wireless Optical one I'm using now tracks fine, it's just dying.

I'm installing USB Overdrive now, lets see what happens.

Not just Logitech mice, my roommate has had similar problems with other brands of mice. Windows and OS X compute mouse speed differently.(Resolution, speed factor, DPI of the mouse, etcetera...)

I've found that unplugging and then replugging the mice can help sometimes, but don't ask me why.

OK, I've given up on this thing. No matter what I do it won't work properly.

I'm going to Kenwood tomorrow to get a Mighty Mouse. At least I think I am, I might get a Bluetooth Apple mouse, depends. I'm gonna try them all out.

Back with Mighty Mouse. Problem solved, it works fine. I have it on the next to the fastest tracking speed, but I guess I've always preferred fast mice.

Pity about not getting to the bottom of the Logitech problem - but glad you're happy with the Mighty Mouse.

(Were you able to get an exchange or was it wasted $?)

I'm going to take it back to Walmart in a day or two. If they won't take it back, I'll stick it in a drawer as a spare for my mom's old PC. It was only $15, not the end of the world.

My MX900 has no such problems...and I only need to have the tracking speed set at around half.
