Probably everyone knows this...but.
I really want all my tv episodes that I have on my HD displayed in iTunes in the tv shows so I can organise it nice and pretty and use coverflow etc. Well I didnt want to have to re-encode the whole lot, but just really "library" them. Well, I found the solution is, if you have quicktime pro, just to go "save as" and then as a reference. Just drag that reference file into iTunes, and it is put into the coverflow etc. Then you can play the movie/tv show within itunes. I know this may well be common knowledge, but anyways... |

This, unlike your other "ah ha!" moment () is new to me. Are the files mp4 or avi?

If you don't have QT Pro or if you want something a titch easier, you can download this droplet thingy and it'll create a QT Media Link and add to iTunes. It worked wonderfully for all the tv shows I've downloaded.

Now if somebody could only solve the problem of how to multiply label a whole set. For example, you can individually say what season of a show it is, but the moment you try and do say a whole season, it doesn't let you. Also, if you label the "show", it stops coverflow working.
Either its very buggy, or I'm just dumb. |

Another cool little feature that I found was this: I always watch dvd's in bed and stuff with my iMac. Now the pain is that I have to get up from bed to put mac to sleep, which is just a pain. All you have to do is hold down the play button on your remote, and it will go to sleep.
Again, probably a well known feature and me trying to be clever! |

Sounds suspiciously similar to the iPod turn off feature.

Does anyone know how to have these reference files show up in the shared videos of front row? Both my iMac and my MacBook can play avi files using the divx plugin, but they don't show up in my shared videos section.

Another cool tip I discovered today:
Press shift and use the scroll wheel for horizontal scrolling, if you don't have a mighty mouse. |

Just thought I'd bump this, as I've discovered a slight varied use for it. I have all my movies that I rip from my DVD's stored on an external drive now. The problem is, I was finding it hard to get them to stay on iTunes in the movie section and not fuck around by deciding to copy themselves to the Macbook hd. So I just use this method, uses about 1-3MB of space per reference file, and keep them on the laptop and it indexes everything perfectly. B-e-a-utiful.
