All horseshit aside, I do believe this rumor (not so much about the black model). But I think a new, redesigned (thinner, sleeker, blah blah, etc.) iMac is on the horizon. Waiting in the wings. Just around the corner. And so on.

And I think we'll see it within 3-6 weeks (before July arrives).

This current design is, remember, more than two-and-a-half years old (late August 2004). And no, I don't count the rear port rearrangement (vertical-to-horizontal), the rounded back changes, the internal access/RAM slot changes (or the addition of the built-in iSight) true "redesigns"...merely evolutionary tweaks along the way of that particular design (much like sticking the 17" and 20" displays on the iMac G4, or adding those two pattern models to the slot-loading iMac G3 jellybeans...the appearance changed somewhat but it was still the same basic model: jellybean and sunflower iMacs).

Same here...they're still working off the basic iMac G5 design/materials from nearly three years ago.

I'm expecting a true re-working/overhaul of some sort. It's a nice, damn-near perfect design. But I don't think Apple wants to just "give up" and not push things further if/when they can. This is their flagship Mac, after all. They'll want to keep it fresh and exciting, and two-and-a-half years is more than enough time for something to run its course (an iMac design, a typical relationship, etc.).

Except that there's nothing non-obvious in LoopRumors's claim. Of course it's gonna be thinner, sleeker, lighter, quieter, faster, more capable and more versatile, all at a lower price. That's what computer revisions do: they improve matters. Hence my inability to take this thread seriously. Your post is the first attempt at adding some useful background info (e.g., the current design is from mid-'04), but there just isn't much substantiated merit to this discussion, as far as I'm concerned.

Will there be a black iMac eventually? Perhaps. The iPod has gone that road, and so has the MacBook, so why not the iMac as well.

Now, whether it will already have LED backlighting, whether it will have ExpressCard (please, please, please) at least in the higher models, and whether it will add more USB ports (pretty please): those are questions that I care about. And LoopRumors does nothing even to speculate on them.

That's all I was attempting to do, merely from a "design refresh" standpoint.

But yeah, maybe some more USB (even a front-mounted USB and FireWire port for easier access?), a card slot, etc. The LED stuff Steve talked about in his "greener Apple" letter is certainly a possibility?

I realize the inevitability of the whole thinner/sleeker/quieter/faster/cheaper thing, but we don't always know the when/how.

But I think it's very, very near. Surprisingly so.
