Okay, I just watched Steve's iPhone 3G intro on youtube again, and noticed something. He mentioned about 2G talk time and 3G talk time; you get 10 hours of 2G talk time or 5 hours of 3G talk time.

My question is, when we are on phone talking, are we using the 3G network?

Erm, if you are on the phone talking, and you are in a 3G area, and you have 3G enabled, then you're using 3G.

If you are not in a 3G area, or if you disabled 3G, then you'll use EDGE.

3G isn't just for data! It has advantages for voice communications, too (simultaneous voice and data being one of them).

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

Okay, sorry if this sounds stupid, hmm... so when I'm on EDGE, the communications between two phone isn't simultaneous? What if the one I'm talking to doesn't have 3G? Will the communication between us still benefit from 3G?

I think what robo means is that when using 3G you have send/recieve data from your phone as well as voice. So you can send an email while talking to someone. Whereas on Edge you can only to one at a time.

That's right. When I'm talking on Edge and I try to use data, ie Safari, Mail etc. I get a message saying something along the lines of cellular data unavailable during calls. On 3G and wifi however, no problem.
