I've got a new iMac coming next week and being a programmer and general geekster, I'll start screwing around with things right off the bat. What I need is a suggestion(s) as to what s/w or method if it's included in the OS to do a complete image of the hard drive when I first get it. I have an external usb hard drive that I use with an XP system. I can create a new partition to hold the disk image.

To create one flat image file:
/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility File: New: Disk Image from (Select a device)... Or to create a "clone" of one drive onto another: Carbon Copy Cloner |

Thanks! This is going to be very interesting. The last MAC I owned was one of the originals back in 1982. Sure has changed a lot.

You're welcome!
If it was 1982, you were probably using a Lisa or an Apple II. The original Macintosh was not released until 1984. |

You're right. It was 1984.

If you are doing this when you first get it, before you plan to install any software or make some basic changes. In other words 'out of the box' as your post suggests.... Then don't even bother, you will be giving a set of recovery/install DVDs with your iMac for OSX and the other apps it comes with. Should you screw something up, just pop in the DVD, boot off it, and do a fresh install.
There's little reason you'd want to make an image of the default install, so just use the DVDs provided. no sig, how's that for being a rebel! |
