Was wondering if anyone could explain this to me.

I recently got the new appleTV. Hooked up to my tv via HDMI (obviously) and to my network via ethernet.

So my friend comes over last night. He's got a copy of inception on his iphone, that he bought via itunes. The intention is that he will Airplay the movie on to my TV via the appleTV.

Sounds easy, right? He starts up the movie and hits the airplay button. The movie shows up on my tv, and plays for 2 seconds, and then goes black. There's a big nasty error message on the screen, that goes something like this:

"The HDMI connection is not HDCP compliant, so you can't watch the video!"

Well that's dumb. What the hell is not compliant? The TV is only a year old. Maybe the HDMI cable is screwy?

Well my friend isn't ready to give up, since he really wants me to watch this overrated movie. So he says, "why don't you unplug the ethernet, and use WiFi to connect your appleTV to the network."

So I give that a try, and all of a sudden, it works! Which I should be happy about, except for the fact that it makes no damn sense at all!

Any ideas? Do I just have to keep unplugging the ethernet every time I want to airplay? Seems ... I dunno ... silly?

Hmm, this is just a guess, especially since I can't see your setup, but is it possible that there was another device attached to the network that wasn't HDCP compliant, and was somehow getting involved in the streaming process, which doesn't happen if it all has to be wireless?

I'd say to test it out, rather than unplug the AppleTV from the network, try unplugging any other computers from the network one at a time, and see if it changes anything.

edit: One other question, if unplugged from the ethernet connection, did that mean your AppleTV was then totally offline from the outside world?

No, after I unplugged the ethernet, I set up the wifi, so it could talk to my iMac before we tried airplaying it again.

The only other thing I could think of is that somehow the connection between the ethernet port and the video out wasn't HDCP compliant, but from where the wireless connection was located somehow it was?

This is why I think HDCP is total shit.

This popped up on mine once, but I just stopped and restarted the movie.

Try unplugging the HDMI and replugging it. I have a DVD that does that sometimes.
