Anyone know when is the Professional version supposed to come out? I'm trying to decide whether to wait for the Professional version or go ahead and buy Office X and put in for the free upgrade.

Well, as far as I can tell, the Professional version is the exact same, except it will include Virtual PC 7 (once it comes out). I don't know if you need that. If so, you might want to wait, because VPC 7 is supposed to be much faster and more usable than VPC 6.

Yep. VPC 7 is the reason for the hold-up, as it's not available yet. I don't think anyone knows for sure when it's due but if you don't need to run PC apps from your Mac, go ahead and get the Office 2004 standard upgrade.

Well, yes, I do need to run PC apps, just wanted to know how soon will the Professional version be out. Hopefully soon . . .

I've not seen anything verifiable but I would say before September.

A beta of VPC7 is out there.....'in the wild' ;-)

It has been doing th rounds for a while and is a lot faster than 6.

So I would expect VPC7 to be out fairly soon...

Almost tempted to buy it were it not for the fact that buying VPC means putting windows on my hard drive (which scares me a wee bit). Plus there's really nothing other than games and one or two apps I'd even use (IE 6 to test web sites for example).

I could probably get a used Pentium II desktop for about $20 that would run Windows XP many times faster than VirtualPC ever could.

That's my thinking too. I know a lot of people with older PCs that would give them to me. I'd rather not ever have to deal with VPC.

If the reports about G5 optimization are to be believed, I doubt very much that VPC on those machines would be outperformed by anything less than a PIII of decent stature. I mean, if a VPC on a G5 were outperformed *many times over* by a PII, there would be no point to shipping it at all.

Eh, whatever. I wouldn't want to put anything like Windows on my Mac anyway That's like whoring it.

Besides, who wants an already slow and inconsistent OS running even slower?

This account does not bode well for a speed increase...

So much for the hype. I didn't realize they were showing it at the Expo; you'd think we'd have heard something official on that from MacCentral or other non-rumor sources.

I'll wait for a more thorough review from a web site with more cred first.

And I would be surprised if it was very different apart from the speed, there's only so much you can do with a VPC style emulator.
