Trying out my hand at B&W photos. Not sure how to go about it but I kinda like the way this turned out.

This photograph is being printed, framed and will be hung on my wall soon. And it's titled Self-portrait on the streets of Kyoto. I had no choice but to be narcissistic.

I know that this thread is for our own photos, but I enjoyed the photos in this set so much that I felt compelled to link to it:

Striking and emotional photography.

Closed amusement parks are creepy.

Agghhh. Giant picture. Will fix it later when I get to my other computer...

EDIT: Better, but the resize has not been kind to the detail. Will try harder tomorrow.

Our cabin is not a winter place. The plumbing and insulation are not four-season. Also, the road is not kept up during the winter, so you have to ski or snowshoe in (though not all that far a distance from the plowed road). Rarely, we do this, and spend an overnight, bringing our supplies on a toboggan behind us. Provided it is not deep cold, a good fire in the stove can overcome the lack of insulation and keep the place fairly warm.

It was gloriously sunny and warm this past weekend (well above freezing during the day), so we decided to visit. This is a picture of the still frozen lake and the deep snow on the hillside. In 4-5 weeks the snow and the ice likely will be gone.

I took a two-day course in developing and printing B&W film in the darkroom last weekend. Just picked up an old Canon 620 for about fifty bucks and I've been playing around a bit.

Man I miss the intense, scared-to-fuck-it-up fun of developing film and making prints. The chemicals, the smells, everything. I used to have all of that shit somewhere, like enlargers and cans and tubs and whatnot, but I'm pretty sure that all went away with one of my 'life-purges' that I occasionally freak out and do. I need to get back in to the hands-on stuff.

So it goes.

I spent the weekend at a large-format workshop. We spent Saturday lugging LF cameras up and down a mountain, then Sunday in the darkroom developing and printing.

The 4x5 negs were developed in D76 and the 8x10s in pyro. This is a proof of one of my 8x10 shots:

(Obviously a photo of a photo with an iPhone isn't going to capture the detail of an 8x10)

My first time shooting anything larger than 35mm.

*Plus* the instructor has a 35mm/120 enlarger he's giving away (someone gave it to him but he only shoots large format). I moved to a new place last month and my laundry room has enough room to set it up as a darkroom. I currently can develop 35mm at home but can't print. That might be changing soon.

Picking up my new enlarger tonight!

I also just rented a medium format Pentax 67 kit for my upcoming road trip, plus bought a bunch of 120 FP4.

I don't have the discipline for film, but I'd love to be able to play with analogue printing processes. I wonder if there's a convenient way to step from a digital file into some of the different chemistry based printing with some sort of intermediary step, like printing a large format negative from a digital file, and then into different kinds of old school printing...

You can use Inkofilm to create negatives with an inkjet printer.

This photo's a couple years old, shot on B&W film. My best friend had a mariachi band at her wedding.

I'd like to see more shots of that band. I love that music, the clothing, etc. Those years I lived in San Diego, there would often be mariachi bands at restaurants, farmer's markets/swap meets, art-and-food fairs, etc. I'd go to and I'd just stand there and watch/listen. It's like south-o'-the-border bluegrass (all acoustic, unamplified), with cool-looking Porter Wagoner suits.

Some of my favorite parts/memories from that time. Seeing that pic kinda brought it all back..."aaaah, I recognize that instrument/outfit!"
