Who wants to lay odds on this one? I am betting Apple shoots for 10-2/3 or 10-9/10. With iMacs pretty much gone, that would suggest a "processor bump" is not happening. There have also been rumors of new 13" Retinas and 8" iPads. Plenty of rumor mills have speculated as to an early October event, and it sure is looking possible.

I am guessing Apple is going with the following at said "event":

iMac

The iMac should be a given. It is OOS everywhere, and shipping times have slipped. I am guessing at a brand new form factor. Slimmer (needless, but coming anyway) sans optical drive (argument elsewhere, please); Firewire 800; Thunderbolt; USB 3.0; Ethernet; Sandy Bridge; newer screen tech, but no Retina (although I maintain the possibility of a high-end 27" with Retina in the $2500-$3000 range). Also, possibility of better SSD options and built-in flash storage. Price range is $1199-$3000.

13" Next Generation MacBook Pro with Retina display

Specs should be obvious. 128GB at the low-end, with 256 and 512 options. Not sure they would offer a 768. 4GB RAM at the low-end, with 8 and 16GB options. No optical (obvious); thunderbolt x 1, HDMI and a pair of USB 3.0. Price range would run $1499-$2499.

8" iPad

Still not sure about this rumor, but it makes sense for Apple to jump in. If they can get an iPad into the $249-$299 price range, they will clean up all the bottom feeders in one swoop. I kind of expect this to happen. If the 8"iPad uses the same resolution as the current iPad 2, then there will be a treasure trove of Apps available with no extra work from the App developers (well, almost none ). I've thought about the whole iPod Touch pricing and form factor, but I no longer this this would be a problem, as the iPod would still be the only option that would fit in your pocket.

Discuss with politeness and love!

I'm not entirely convinced Apple will even host an 'event' for new iMacs, maybe something really small, even if it is a radical new design, I half expect them to just show up on the front page + press release.

I predict an announcement goes out next week or the first week of October following iPhone sales numbers.... and the event is called "... One More Thing"

There is too much evidence to not believe it is going to happen.... even then, I just questions Apple's timing and plan for this all... it doesn't seem wise to me to release major products like this so close together, especially when the iphone 5 is going to be a major supply issue for the next 4-6 weeks.

It makes no sense from a manufacturing standpoint, but heading into Christmas without a valid desktop offering makes far less sense!

Titling an event "... One More Thing" would be brilliant.

It would be a perfect tribute to Steve Jobs at the one year anniversary point, and especially if said new iMac is the of all desktop computers!

"The New iMac with touch controls"

Wowzers!

Yeah, I think you pretty much nailed it, except I think they will retina-ize the iMacs, price be damned, because they'll keep the old ones around with a spec bump, the same way the rMBP didn't replace the MBP. 21.5" and 27" models with retina displays and the specs you mentioned. No touch, though, because what's the point? $1599 for the retina 21.5", $2799 for the retina 27".

Then a 13" rMBP, again, not replacing the current 13" MBP, because Apple seems to give no fucks about how many 13" models they have, so why not throw another one in? I bet it starts at $1599.

Finally the iPad Air, exactly what everyone is expecting—iPad 2 guts in a lighter package, at $299 ($249?) to knock it out of the park for Xmas.

People will complain it's disappointing and not as good/cheap as the Fire/N7, and Apple will sell 5 million of the things before the year is out, more than the new Fire/N7 combined.

Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris, not the end.

I agree. None of these three things are "mindblowing game-changers". That's no slam at all on any of them, of course. I'm simply saying they're all offshoots or variations of existing products and tech. What is Apple going to honestly say about an 8" iPad that a) isn't obvious and b) requires a dedicated event?

Same with the other two. I don't think the iMac (or any Mac, except for maybe the Air) carries much prestige or weight at Apple these days. I don't think customers or Apple truly get that wound up about new iMacs because that's just not where everyone's head is these days, and, honestly...what's exciting about an aluminum display on a stand at this point? The jellybean and lampshade era are long behind us, along with that sort of "OMG!!!" design. 10 years ago, things couldn't be colorful, swoopy and "out there" enough. These days, when everything's a minimalist aluminum or white rounded-corner square, there just isn't that same giddy lust and eye-porn (iPorn?) there once was. I'd love to be proven wrong, believe me!

As for the 13" MacBook Pro, I don't even know why the hell this machine even exists at this point.

All these things together, yeah, might warrant an event. But Apple usually seems very focused and specific at these things. This is a mish-mash, to me...a desktop that doesn't carry the allure and presence it once did, a 2" smaller version of something Apple has sold three generations of already and a laptop that isn't quite thin/light enough to be an Air, but I can't imagine it being a hardcore professionals choice of notebook. Buy the 15" (or an Air) and shut the hell up.

I know Jim Dalrymple gave it a "yep" (or did he?) but I'm not fully sold for some reason.

I can't picture, logistically and the thought of bringing everyone back out to the Bay Area again, so soon, Apple having another event so quickly (within a month?!) after the iPhone 5 event. I know it's not on their dime, but I still can't see them asking that of others so soon. Has Apple ever staged two such events (product rollouts/introductions) one month apart? I can't recall. And I'm not talking about an event taking place within a month or so of an already-established presentation (like MWSF or WWDC), but two "dedicated event" scenarios (either at Moscone, Yerba Buena or at the Infinite Loop auditorium).

I don't recall such a thing.

$5 says the iPhone 5 stays on Apple's homepage for at least two months solid. Other things (new iMac, etc.) might get one of the four squares down below, but this is all iPhone 5 for the next while, I'm betting...

You know I remember a time when I got bored between Apple product releases because they happened so infrequently. I also remember, around the same time, thinking "wouldn't it be nice if Apple made more products? I don't really need multiple Macs or iPods... I wish Apple did more!"

And now, here we are, wondering if Apple will release 6 updated products in time for Christmas, or just 3.

Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris, not the end.

If an October iPad Air event happens, it should be October 9. Here's the timeline for the next few weeks if so:

9/21: iPhone 5 on sale
9/24: iPhone 5 First Weekend Numbers Announced
[1 week]
10/2: Apple announces October event
10/10: iPad Air released
10/16: Apple Announces iPad Air first weekend numbers during FQ4 conference call, where they also announce cumulative iPhone 5 through end of quarter (likely 10-12 million).

Putting the October event on 10/3 would be too compressed--invites would have to go out next week.

I don't think the 8" iPad will be the primary focus. I think everyone is kind of "expecting" it. However, the one product for which there is no rumor support, nor wild press speculation, is the iMac. Everyone thinks this category is dead. But I don't think so.

We are seeing an unusual trend: PC switchers who buy an iPad are coming in for an iMac. The iPad already meets the mobile needs of these simple computer users, and they are rarely interested in a laptop, preferring instead to get a desktop replacement. Afterall, the desktop is what they are used to. Thus, they want an iMac to complement their iPad.

That in mind, a smaller iPad is not the "surprise" some might think it would be, nor would be a 13" Retina. I think everyone is expecting a smaller Retina and iPad, but there is very little jabber about the iMac, and this lack of attention is misplaced. This is the one product category where Apple has the surprise advantage of smacking the entire computer industry squarely on the head. While getting much harder to do, I smell the type of secrecy that preceded the iPhone event in 2007, whence Apple shocked the world.

Inviting the press back to Cupertino/Sn Francisco for a release of what everyone knows will be a smaller iPad, and then hitting them with the next generation of desktop computing, is precisely the kind of surprise flanking maneuver that would squeeze HP and Dell right out of the top spots in desktop shipments.

I know it's a long-shot, but it would be the shot!

I just have this weird feeling. We have been seeing some very unusual activity in supply and from Apple. I have no "evidence", nor would I be able to share if I did. But strange things are afoot. I have been at this job for eight years, and I have never seen this kind of combined weirdness from both Apple and the suppliers. Not even the iMac G5 release had this kind of oddity about it.

Something's up.

On the side, these minor updates (new processor, upgraded graphics/RAM bus, USB 3) could have been done in the summer with little work from Apple (relatively speaking). There is absolutely no reason for them to pull what they're pulling for a measly, minor update. No reason whatsoever!

It's bigger than that. Has to be. If it's not, then…

The New iMac, Steve Jobs Edition, is coming. I can smell it. Stinks like grass stains, I'm telling you! This all just has the feeling of something bigger than "it's got USB 3"! There is an air of secrecy around the iMac, with absolutely nothing floating in the rumor mills other than OOS warnings. No info from analysts or speculators or tech-geeks. Nothing!

Prior to the iPhone in late 2006, there were these little tidbits of rumors about an Apple phone. No one really knew anything, and everything that could be gleaned was stabbing-in-the-dark-guesswork at best! This has that kind of feel. A huge part of Apple's lineup is woefully devoid of rumors, and yet supply has dried up to the point where even the floor models are going away.

I really hope I'm right! The store needs a desktop system to jumpstart sales for all these PC folk looking for a new home computer.

The Next Generation iMac would clobber the holiday season. Regardless of what the techies say (and even Steve Jobs, although he was cryptic), there is still a huge market for desktop systems! Positively huge! Now is the time.

Maybe the lack of rumors is due to the fact that there is really nothing new or exciting about the new iMac... ?

I'd like to think this, and I want to believe that Apple is still pushing innovation on the Mac platform but, unfortunately it is just hard to believe. Apple doesn't seem to take risks anymore, and the Mac just hasn't been Apple's focus for so long now.

I think they have innovated through the laptop line quite well. It is the desktop line that has been neglected. The "why" I don't think has anything to do with not caring. I think it has more to do with timing. Apple is very busy developing their next-generation offering, which includes laptops and iOS devices. Mobile is big, obviously. But I still hold out hope that Apple still sees the validity of the desktop and its place in the "post-pc" world they have created.

Still going to hold out hope that the next-gen Mac Pro will be broken out into brain box and slot box connected via Tbolt.

Obviously the Mac Pro is a strikingly niche product right now, but it's always annoyed the piss out of me that to get raw computing power, you had to get the whole enchilada, and to get even a single slot, you had to get the whole enchilada.

Tbolt lets them get around that for all but a *TINY* fraction of even their very small customer base, and provides new capabilities via the slot box to the rest of the lineup.

But then, my prognostication abilities are poor. I bought a Newton 2100.

Sounds like something you'd do, you knucklehead!

**looks at MessagePad 110 in service department and shrieks**

We're kind of hoping for a similar path to the Mac Pro: A dual-drive, 32GB RAM, 12-core Xeon box with a pair of slots and about the size of a large box of Kleenex®, sporting three or four Thunderbolt ports, USB 3, FW 800, a pair of Gigabits, maybe even a SCSI port…

Support for four TB Displays out of the box, and an offering of 1 or 2 configurable ThunderBolt external slot/drive boxes. That would be cool.

I'm with ya!
