The Mac App Store is telling me I have a new security update for my 2009 27" iMac (which maxes out at High Sierra.)

It's downloaded the update, and when I hit Restart, the monitor goes black but I can see and move around the cursor.

Nothing else seems to be happening, and I'm forced to hard restart the machine from the power button.

Haven't had any problems with updates before. Any ideas what I am missing here?

After checking some online posts, I managed to empty some cache files, and it seems that cleared the blockage. I can restart the Mac and the update resumed installation. However, Spotlight now seems problematic and finding older emails in Mail from the search field is impossible.

I'm trying to reindex Spotlight, but not sure how that's going. Really Apple? To reindex Spotlight you have to fiddle with the Privacy pane in System Prefs, and even then you have no visual idea if it's actually reindexing? Who designed Spotlight? A visiting Windows team?

Anyone have any tips on fixing Search in Apple Mail - High Sierra?

I know almost nothing about Terminal commands, but the ones listed on that page I linked to seemed to do the trick.
(I put that one above in, and nothing came back.)

I left the computer alone for 12 hours, and it seems like the Spotlight reindexing went well.
I can find emails in Mail again, and all seems right in the world.

Thanks for your help Chucker.
