If i spend 1900 for a new 20" iMac and in three years decide to upgrade my CPU, is there any way i can plug a different computer into the Imac's monitor?

Nope.
That's the price you pay for getting everything so tightly integrated together. |

Well... I mean, with some soldering and circuit diagrams, I would think it may just be possible... It's gotta use a standard DVI connection, right? But I don't know how much loss a DVI connection could stand - the soldering would increase the resistance of the cable unless you are a pro. And you'd have to hack the iMac open pretty hard core. In one word... no.

no, it doesn't need to use a standard dvi connection... do laptop displays have a dvi connection from the built-in lcd? not a chance...
