People who design websites built entirely in flash and think it's acceptable to wait 2 minutes watching a cleverly-animated progress bar before you can get into the site, which then doesn't allow you to highlight and copy any information, should be taken outside and beaten with their own keyboards while being forced to watch endless loops of their own animations until they choke on thier own bloody vomit.

Discuss.

Flash has advantages and disadvantages.

In many, even most cases, it is probably best to avoid flash, and in terms of accesibility, Flash is a pretty bad way to go, but some sites do use it to good effect. I am thinking specifically of www.homestarrunner.com

That site is built entirely in Flash, and, since it's primarily a site devoted to presenting Flash cartoons, it works well.

My advice to someone designing a new website would be to avoid flash, but it does need to be taken on a case by case basis, I think.

in terms of accesibility?
98% of computers world wide have flashplayer... and 56kers should not be using the internet.

use a flash animation if you must, but designing a whole site in nothing but flash should meet with at least the above punishment, followed by several months of using nothing but Windows 95, Explorer 2.0, and a 33.6 modem to access the Internets.

It's not unlike someone using Photoshop to type a four-paragraph letter.

It's ironic that you speak of "worldwide" availability of Flash players; yet, you fail to grasp that the overwhelming majoring of users in the world are restricted to dial-up access. Heck, even in nations like the US broadband still isn't available (and certainly not affordable) everywhere.

And you forget that the term "accessibility" does not just mean "compatibility" but encompasses a much larger field including UI accessibility. Think along the lines of, "how would a disabled person be able to use my site with a screen reader or a wand or such?"

Of course, disabled people aren't the majority; so, I guess they don't matter anyway.

Obviously, disabled people, along with people who don't have broadband, should not even be using the internet.

Then again - maybe it's people who believe the above, who really should not even be using the internet... hmm....

One more thing;

If you want to make website entirely in flash, fine. Just have a non flash mirror.

Actually, I would love it if the websites all had a text only mirror. That would be a huge boon....

EDIT: I meant, all websites everywhere should have a text only mirror.

it depends who you're targeting

if you're a website like yahoo msn sony apple etc... you have a wide range of visitors.
but if you're a specialty site, graphic design, fashion, film, entertainment etc.. your client is not some wyoming grandmother looking up gucci handbags.

what im trying to say is, if a website is purely informational or very commerce oriented, then yes, flash wont do and yes these sites should be capable of loading on 56k... but if its a site like www.vulcan.com or www.collider.com.au are not ment to be visited by the "overwhelming majoring of users in the world are restricted to dial-up access"

Wait..

I just had a inspiration....

What if we passed a law requiring all porn be flash-only site? That'd clean up the filth a lot and make filtering a breeze!!!

Or compel users to visit porn through MIDI only...

From Oral to Aural... presumably less filthy, but it is dynamically text driven...
