It doesn't even attempt to search. It just produces no results. Should I just wait for the next system update?

It might help to make the system reindex. You can do this by dragging your system's HD into the list of excluded locations, and then removing it again, in the Spotlight system preferences pane.
Not sure that it'll work - but can't really hurt things.. Euain |

Did you run through all the usual stuffl? Repair permissions, fsck, delete caches?

Odd. I just tried searching in a Finder window, and Spotlight was fine. Just in the toolbar that it doesn't work.
