The Good News™ is that the 3d parts of Google Earth are allegedly better under OpenGL in OSX than the DirectX under Windows.

The Bad News™ has been that it wasn't available for the Mac yet.

No More...

Has the option for massive textures, and lots of (Aqua-styled) knobs to twirl, but not bad for a beta.

12.5 MB, but you'll probably need broadband to stream the maps.

Google keeps getting friendlier.

Have a direct link to the download? Looks like they pulled it from macupdate.

Works okay be it not super fast on my powerbook G4 1 GHz with second screen attached.
Crashed on me once already, but hey: it's a beta.
Another gripe: heavy network and rendering load at the same time makes the mouse cursor jumpy, very jumpy. They'll have to fix that one.

The jumpy cursor made it a little difficult to use. Half the times I'd go for a button near the bottom of the window, I'd end up down in my dock instead. Very sluggish on my machine, but still very cool.

One nice app there, wish my campus had a better internet connection, though, it could look so much nicer.

Does anyone know why is Asia, for instance, such as Vietnam the details are not there?

When I zoom into most ares, the details come in to focus, but if I azoom into zome cities in ASia, it just gets pixelated.

Jeez, guys. I just removed a bunch more posts from this thread. How hard is this to understand?

If the offending member continues with such posts, he or she is subject to immediate suspension from the forums for any amount of time the administrators or moderators deem necessary. Furthermore, posts asking for technical support regarding pirated software, requesting or breaking serial numbers, or otherwise bypassing licensing schemes is also not allowed and will be treated in the same manner as posts that directly ask for pirated software.
Keep it off the forums.

Distributing non-public pre-release builds, to this administrator's eye, equates piracy.

Easy.

Google simply doesn't have high-resolution images of everything. Remember, these map services just use a bunch of old satellite images that are "stitched" together. Only urban areas and other geographically-interesting areas have current, high-resolution images. Some of the images are years old; my last neighborhood is half missing from Google's imagery.

The photos of my area are terribly old. My school (for some strange reason) has been rebuilding the campus over the last six years. In the shots of the school, none of it has been rebuilt.

Non-public, pre-release builds ought to stay private, sure... but once its parked on MacUpdate, it ought to be fair game for mirroring, right?

geez... you're out to the pub for a few hours and all heck breaks loose...

I'd agree with that. Also Google has a policy of *leaking* stuff in Beta so I really don't feel that they are that concerned about this stuff spreading...

No. MacUpdate has been known to post beta builds of software even when the developers explicitly repeatedly told them not to.

Wow!

I downloaded this last night (from that lother, closed link) and...well, there's goes my sleep.

I WAS DRUNK WITH POWER!!! I felt like Superman, or someone holding the world in their hands. That "tilt" thing, when I first discovered it, was awesome!

I "flew" around my hometown, and all the other places I've lived the past decade (Orange County, San Diego, metro Washington DC, Nashville).

I was up WAY too late.

Yup! Me too!

After discovering every place in the world I have ever been to, and my wife showing me her home town in Africa I went off to try and find UFOs, and Black Hawk Helicopters.....

Then I started searching through bits of desert and ice landscapes and so on looking for strange stuff!

My productivity has taken a big dive!

EDIT : Then I decided to try and find every Drop Zone I had ever jumped out of a plane at, simply by recognising the view from the air! Goddamn you Google!
