http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2007/06/05mbp.html

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/070605/aqtu180.html?.v=3

New Features
  • 15" MBP utilizing new mercury-free, LED-backlit display.
  • Optional 1920x1200 on 17" MBP
  • C2D 2.2 or 2.4 GHz w/4MB L2 cache
  • 2GB memory on all models
  • Nvidia 8600GT Graphics

$1999: 15.4", 2.2 GHz, 120GB, 128MB 8600GT
$2499: 15.4", 2.4 GHz, 160GB, 256MB 8600GT
$2799: 17", 2.4 GHz, 160GB, 256MB 8600GT

Sounds like no LED backlit 17"? I'm still skimming through the release. At least there's an option for the higher res screen on it.

LED-backlit, 1920x1200 option on the 17".

Welcome to HD, baby.

Now it's time for me to do my traditional refurb price watch. Maybe the old MBP models will drop dramatically, and I can sell of my MacBook to buy one.

[edit]

The store is back up! The screen upgrade is only $100 retail... I'm off to check EDU! Edit: It's only $90 to upgrade for EDU customers.

[edit (again)]

I don't see any changes on old refurb prices. Maybe we'll see them soon, though.

[another freakin' edit]

I don't think the 17" is LED-backlit. I think it's just the 15" for now.

Bummed they still don't have eSATA. Nice little bump, though.

What exactly can we expect with the new LED screen? What benefits will we see with it?

I'm hoping these get updated again when Leopard comes out so I can get another little refresh when I get one.

More brightness, more battery life, less environmental damage.

I was hoping a redesign Not that they are ugly or anything. That would be just cool. Or maybe just adding the mag latch or a little tweaking like this...

Still, an interresting upgrade

Talking about the led screens. Anyone have seen some result like "With a led screen, you got x time longer battery life" ?

I am now retiring my original 15" albook (Sep. 2003) for one of these. I tried to order as quickly as possible, so I was hoping for it to be there when I get back from vacation on Friday, but I am guessing it won't be.

Anyways, let the party begin for me!

Noticing an odd discrepancy. Main Apple Store product page says 1-3 days. The configuration page says [4-6] weeks.

Yeah, I'm going to spring for the USD 750 upgrade to 4GB RAM. Holy smokes that's a pricey upgrade.

[Question: would this RAM jump make much of a difference with this processor?]

I'm tempted by the USD 1,999 model, actually. Take the upgrade to 160GB HD for USD 75 and you've got a sweet machine; a lot of niceness and not too pricey.

I wonder why they didn't/can't put a mag latch on the Pro though? Not so important but ...

This is the long rumored Santa Rosa chip right? (Or is that coming later?)

Yes, it's a Santa Rosa-generation Merom. You can tell by the fact that the CPU speeds are multiples of 200, not of 167. That is, the FSB is 4*200=800 MHz, not 4*167=667 MHz. The memory is still clocked at 667, though (DDR2-667/PC2-5300).

I heard some talk about the Express Card ran though USB on the previous MBPs, effectively neutering any eSata Express Card speed-wise. I wonder if this is also the case with these new MBPs?

Otherwise I agree it's a nice bump. 4 GB RAM limit, new GPU and more power efficient display or better resolution, are definitely worthwhile.

And it doesn't make my old rev. A look totally obsolete.

Also, now that this new MBP is out, when is the next likely upgrade scheduled and what would I look for in the next upgrade (i.e., new design, obviously faster chips, anything else.) I am not concerned waiting for 10.5 as I can just upgrade at this time (BTW--they did not offer upgrade coupons today with this offer as some thought they might.)

I have this question in purchasing advice as I am trying to decide today if I should buy or wait for a full upgrade, but if you want I can post a new thread in Speculation.

Now that I got a job, I can buy more Apple products!

What do you think guys ? Is it worth it ? (talking about LED)

ExpressCard has always been hooked up through an x1 PCI Express lane. However, ExpressCard manufacturers can use to implement their cards through USB, giving them USB 2.0 speeds. The crippling is in the cards, not in the MBPs.

Thinking the same. Would love to go with lighter weight (5.4 lbs versus 6.8 lbs as I commute daily on train) but I am seeing that 17" also supports dual screens which might be helpful in the future (the 15" does not.)

IF you go 17", is it worth springing for HD TFT screen? If so, how much will this cut down battery power.

(BTW: I do not see anything on website about batter consumption on these models, or did I miss it?)

Guys, DON'T buy your RAM from Apple. You can get 2x2GB So-DIMMS from OWC, including rebate on the RAM your machine came with, for about $315. Crucial would sell you the same, without the rebate for about $400+. So if Apple is charging $600+, do the math. They're counting on you not wanting to touch the inside of your computer.

I am sorry, not familar with the rebate idea--are you saying you can send them your OEM RAM that comes with the machine and they will credit you back?

Yep. $50 for both chips.

PS - I just realized that the ship time jumped to 4-6 weeks only when I selected the 7200rpm drive for the 15" model. Oddly the same drive for the 17" model stipulates 1-3 days. WTF.

Has anyone else that selecting the glossy display drops $150 off the price? Has that always been the case?

It probably will.

Let's just hope it won't be as the upgrade option on the 24" model.

In relation to this MBP announcement I've just noticed that one of the local Danish Mac news sites are running "Store down" stories on their front-page.

Brad, can you ban www.mediamac.comon.dk ?

Dag. No, they used to be equivalent prices (which caused lots of wringing of hands on the MacBook side of things). I guess we now know why they use the glossy on the MacBooks.

I think the 7200 rpm drives are in short supply upon further review and so the 17" customers are getting the love. Sucks because I'd prefer the 15" LED model, because I wouldn't use it to drive a large wide format screen anyway, but the extra performance the drive would deliver with apps like PS is important.
