I appologise in advance is this has been posted before. I have had a look and cannot find it on AN. I am sure Brad is going to come and tell me off in a minute..
But has anyone noticed that in Safari the 'New Mac Mini' page on the Apple site is a bit messy / wide - compared to the normal web site form factor? http://www.apple.com/macmini/ EDIT - Oh. Ok.. It's all the new products.. I guess this is a subtle hint at widescreen stuff.. Has this been discussed before? Yep. They're telling you to go and buy that 30" screen already.

At least they look a lot better than the Switch pages. I don't think anyone at Apple has even looked at it for months now; at least two pages in that section have had broken links for at least a couple of months now.

About wide web pages.. I think it's just kind of a pain to a lot of us.. I have a 20" cinema display, and my day to day machine is a 17" PowerBook, but I seldom have my browser set that wide. It's not that I don't have the screen real estate. It's that I choose to use my screen real estate to display several windows (overlapping and side by side depending on what I am doing) and this kind of web page either necessitates the scrolling you mention, or filling all the usable screen with your browser. It makes me feel like I am blinkered: Either I scroll and feel cramped in the browser, or I can't see my other apps. Either way it puts me in a bad mood and makes me less appreciative of what I am looking at! Ah well... I suppose we should all get Dual 30" displays really! What am I thinking of! Ye, the best thing about a nice widescreen is that you don't have to run everything full screen like my parents do on their old 1024x768 iMac. I tend to have Safari taking about 80% so I can see my desktop and other apps.

Actually, this thread isn't what I thought it was about (and was happy to see someone else bothered by it, even though it turned out to be something else entirely...but related):
Using Safari 2.0.3 (latest version) and Tiger 10.4.5 (again, latest version), on Apple's homepage, when the iPod Hi-Fi is given the big spot, all is centered and cool. However, when it cycles around to the Mac mini, it's WAY off center...pooches out to the right much further. Use that gray "news" bar above the four smaller photos as a gauge. Being wide is one thing, but it's not even centered. Try it! And if I'm doing/seeing something wrong (or this IS what Scratt is on about), then just beat me with a hose or something. It's similar to scratt's point, although I'm noticing it on the actual homepage. |

Was there a memo sent around to web designers everywhere saying that 1000px+ width pages should be the new standard? Both nytimes.com and cnn.com just updated their site designs to be 1000px+, too.

Ha...well ain't I the dipwad!
I didn't think the Mac mini image thing moved independently of, and self-centered to, the stuff below it. Interesting. Not being a web monkey kinda guy, I had no idea. I saw the horizontal scroll bars all along, but it never occurred to me to actually yank the page/window itself out. BTW, thanks for the shout-out on your site! I'll never live that "dancing dinosaur" remark down, will I? Also, regarding your movie title above: is the "stupid" actually said toward that design? Is it a bad/wrong thing for them to do? Or was it something you just now cobbled together in SnapzPro and the "stupid" is directed at numbnuts like me who didn't think to drag a window out? |
