The world's favorite illustrated jocularity, David Malki !'s Wondermark, is celebrating its 500th strip today. While preparing to salute this great achievement, it suddenly struck me that some AppleNova patrons may not even know what Wondermark is. So, without further ado, the record-breaking (not really) 500th strip, along with a few favorites from weeks and months past.

And, as promised:

That basically sums it up. You can read more by directing your computing apparatus to wondermark.com, or, if you like being old-fashioned, you can purchase strip collections in books. Cheerio!

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

Also, this comic stylistically reminds me of Married to the Sea.

Weird. I used to work with a guy name William Williams. He went by Bill.

And you used to taunt him by introducing him as Will Billiams. Admit it.

This Wondermark thing... it's supposed to be funny? Because... I'm just not seeing it.

Yeah, it makes me angry. Just feels juvenile.

The babysitter bit made me chuckle. The rest....? *shrug*

I'm not a huge fan of the "cutout" type of comics anyways, seems a bit like cheating (though I do think Dinosaur Comics is often very funny).

So it goes.

Screw you guys. This shit is AWESOME.

Lolz.

EDIT: Also, comparing webcomics to Calvin & Hobbes? High standards much? It's a wonder you find anything funny.

It was more a comment on the Xerox cutouts. I only lean on C&H because I know every one by heart.

The red/green eye thing sounds like a near miss at genetic anaglyph capability.

Hehe. Ouch!

Anyway, the type of comedy they're shooting for seems to be overplayed, to me. With all the "funny juxtaposition," its pretty low level stuff.

See, I could critique humor like that, too. "Juvenile," "overplayed," "low-level," whatever. I'm critical by nature, and as a writer I'm certainly familiar with the terms. Indeed, my personal insecurities pushed me, once, toward always taking a "too hip for this" tone.

But I've learned something, and that is this: Nobody lies on their deathbed and wishes they had laughed less.

So now, when something is funny, I laugh. I laugh because the joke is clever or because the pun is witty or because nothing can be both a piranha and a moose at the same time, but mostly, I laugh because it feels good to laugh. (In fact, I am told laughing is actually a natural reflex.) I don't care if it's "played out" or "jumped the shark" or if laughing makes me lose my Hipster Cred, because this is the internet, not the goddamned country club or a wine-tasting party. I still laugh at funny pictures of cats, and I can still laugh at a webcomic regardless of an underdeveloped and at times unsophisticated sense of wit. (I mean, come on. It's not like you have to pass a bar exam to make a webcomic, or something.)

It's my natural tendency to want to share things I find funny with others, but if it's not "funny enough" for you, then all I can do is shrug. And laugh, and maybe pity you, just a little. If I must be a fool, I'd rather be the fool that laughs at everything than the fool that laughs at nothing, because which one would be happier, in the end?

I was just trying to share how I saw the world. As I see it, that's the point of a webforum, at its most pure.

But I'm young, and obviously very naive. Sarcastic asides that add nothing to a conversation are probably a better way to fit in. After all, there's no room for "sharing perspectives" in 140-character twitters!

I think you did find my kryptonite, but probably not in the way you meant.

I dunno, I like the Burger King ad one. The rest, I can give or take, but that's just how it goes with the Internet. And the Internet is SERIOUS BUSINESS.

Guess our wishes don't do dishes or brake repairs...

I think it's pretty funny. I also think Metalocalypse is funny, FWIW.

Metalocalypse hurts my ears,
I'm more of a Killface kind of guy.

These?
Are okay.

I've plans to do some comic-ing sometime, but until then I'm not going to slam anyone else's work.

The red/green stuff?

SOMEBODY FIND OUT WHAT IT IS!!!!!

Cause I got it too.

Now what do I click?
