Here are three videos about the Cutty Sark incident. Might be useful for people outside the UK who can't access the video content of the BBC:

WTF

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070601/...uation_decorum

Quote:
GALESBURG, Ill. - Caisha Gayles graduated with honors last month, but she is still waiting for her diploma. The reason: the whoops of joy from the audience as she crossed the stage.

Gayles was one of five students denied diplomas from the lone public high school in Galesburg after enthusiastic friends or family members cheered for them during commencement.

About a month before the May 27 ceremony, Galesburg High students and their parents had to sign a contract promising to act in dignified way. Violators were warned they could be denied their diplomas and barred from the after-graduation party.

Many schools across the country ask spectators to hold applause and cheers until the end of graduation. But few of them enforce the policy with what some in Galesburg say are strong-arm tactics.

"It was like one of the worst days of my life," said Gayles, who had a 3.4 grade-point average and officially graduated, but does not have the keepsake diploma to hang on her wall. "You walk across the stage and then you can't get your diploma because of other people cheering for you. It was devastating, actually."
Here's the kicker...

Quote:
School officials said they will hear students and parents out if they appeal. Meanwhile, the school said the five students can still get their diplomas by completing eight hours of public service work, answering phones, sorting books or doing other chores for the district, situated about 150 miles southwest of Chicago.

Does the diploma have any kind of legal status? If not, I'd tell them to get fucked.

Not really.

Those who require 'documented proof' of graduation from high school will want to see official transcripts, not a diploma.

Especially in 'this' day and age, it would be easy to whip up a diploma on one's computer. So, though this piece of paper is lovely to look at, and nice to hang on the wall, I don't think it would be all that useful for, say, applying to a university.

It might be useful for applying for an entry-level job at some local company.

Yeah, I read the article this morning and thought the action seemed excessive - *until* I read the background on what had happened the prior year. Some audience members turned into an unruly mob and basically destroyed the ceremony for the normal, well-behaved family members.

In view of that, I can understand why stern measures were taken. Obviously, they were taken against the graduates themselves, which seems incredibly unfair.

But what's the alternative? The school has the ability to discipline its own students, not visiting family members.

Oh well.

*shrug*

Perhaps signs could be posted at entrances to the ceremony location, warning that those who disrupt the ceremony will be removed and detained at the police station.

What they did doesn't irk me all that much considering the background, but requiring them to do community service to get their diplomas now is way out of line and possibly illegal.

Yeah, I agree, that's a bit much. I mean, it never was the graduate's fault to start with. Delaying the diploma should really be enough.

However... maybe they could say: the punishment is X number of hours of community service, and those hours can be served by the people who actually did the cheering, instead of the graduate.

Would you go along with that?

OMG! This story is just unbelievable.

Woman crashes into street festival at 70mph.

Quote:
WASHINGTON — A festive scene quickly turned to horror Saturday night after a vehicle said to be traveling nearly 70 mph crashed into a crowded church street fair, injuring 35 people, authorities said.

Witnesses reported seeing the driver smoking something as she barreled through several blocks and hundreds of people. Strollers were sent flying through the air and a person was seen pinned under the car's wheels after it bowled into a stage of dancing revelers at the annual Unifest fair in Anacostia.

Tonya Bell, 30, of Oxon Hill, Md., was taken into custody near the scene and charged with aggravated assault while armed. Lanier said additional charges are pending.

...or, “She was high, probably off of a drug known as PCP,” Wheeler told FOX News. “That drug on the street is known as ‘dippers,’” he said, adding that it is a marijuana cigarette dipped in embalming fluid and also is known as “wacky tobacky.”

“You just basically lose your mind,” he said.

Alan Etter, a spokesman for the District of Columbia fire department, said authorities believe Bell was going about 70 mph when she tore through the festival. Litter and debris from food stands were scattered in the street. Some of the victims reportedly suffered head injuries and major blood loss.

Ryland Anderson, 19, and Philemon Walker, 24, told The Washington Post they were about to cross the street as the festival was winding down when the car sped past. They described strollers being flung into the air and said they saw the body of a man apparently lodged in the station wagon's wheel well.

"She was driving like 'if you're in my way, you're going to get hit,"' Walker said.

Unifest, which was celebrating its 25th anniversary, is Washington, D.C.'s premiere African-American cultural festival and parade and draws thousands each year.

Couple having sex on edge of downtown office building roof fall 50' to their deaths?

Just...wow.

Quote:
S.C. Cops: Naked Couple Falls 50 Feet From Rooftop to Their Deaths
Wednesday, June 20, 2007

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Police on Wednesday were investigating how a naked couple fell 50 feet from the roof of a downtown office building to their deaths.

The bodies were found on the road by a passing cabdriver around 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Clothing was discovered on the roof, leading authorities to suspect the man and woman, in their early 20s, may have been having sex. Their identities were not released.

"It's too early to rule out anything," Columbia police Sgt. Florence McCants said, but McCants said a preliminary investigation didn't show any sign of foul play.

Here's another one for the WTF is wrong with people file:

Investigators were struggling to piece together what happened Tuesday when David Rivas Morales died defending the driver from people leaving a Juneteenth celebration.

There could have been anywhere from two to 20 attackers, Austin Police Commander Harold Piatt said.

The car in which Morales, 40, was a passenger had entered an apartment complex's parking lot when it struck a 3- or 4-year-old child, Piatt said. The child was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver got out of the car to check on the child and was confronted by several people, Piatt said. When they attacked the driver, Morales got out of the car to protect the driver and was attacked as well. Police said no guns or knives were used.

The driver got away and is cooperating with investigators, who are not releasing his name.

So, the driver hits a young girl at a low speed while turning into a car park. The driver and passenger get out to check on the girl, and are promptly set upon by an angry mob. It's not like the guys were trying to flee the scene, and the injuries to the girl were not serious.

Hope they find each and everyone of these fucktards.

OMG!!! Sewage awash in the aisles on an overseas Continental flight? How UNbelievably disgusting.

Turns out, it was thanks to some anal-retentive passenger who felt compelled to wear latex gloves in the bathroom, and then flushed the gloves, despite warnings NOT to flush foreign objects. And it sounds like he probably flushed gloves multiple times. Jeez.

Continental Apologizes for Overflowing Toilet, Sewage-Filled Aisles
Thursday, June 21, 2007

HOUSTON — Passengers who endured a two-day trans-Atlantic odyssey with sewage overflowing from a jet's lavatories are getting an apology from Continental Airlines for the "poor conditions."

Flight 71, with 168 customers on board, took off June 13 from Amsterdam bound for Newark, N.J., but only got as far as Shannon, Ireland, because of a problem with the lavatory.

The flight resumed the next day after repair work seemed to restore smooth flow in the lavatory system, a Continental spokesman said Thursday. But during the flight from Shannon to Newark, renamed Flight 1970, "the problem developed again," spokesman Dave Messing said.

When the plane landed in Newark, he said, it was determined that the blockage was caused by someone flushing latex gloves down the toilet.

There are signs above the toilet that warn against flushing foreign objects.

"Occasionally these instructions are overlooked," he said.

A passenger told Seattle television station KING that sewage flowed into the aisles, only one restroom was partially working, and flight attendants kept serving meals but told passengers not to eat much.
Well, now that I think about it, can you imagine how completely grossed out and horrified the 'gloves' person must have been, when what he did caused raw sewage to be washing up and down the aisles for *hours*?

I guess that's a sort of karmic revenge, wouldn'tya say?

Oh, and note that the flight took off on the 13th.

Baby in China has 6 sewing needles embedded in his body.

Apparently, one was even inserted into the top of his head.

Quote:
Baby in China to Have Surgery to Remove 6 Sewing Needles
Saturday, June 23, 2007

BEIJING — A one-year-old boy in southern China is about to have surgery after doctors found he had six sewing needles in his body.

Newspapers report the parents took the baby to a hospital because he had been crying for several days and not eating well.

The child's parents, who are migrant workers, said they had no idea how the needles ended up in their son.

The Beijing Youth Daily ran a color photo of an X-ray showing five needles throughout the boy's torso. The Beijing Morning Post had X-ray closeups including one that showed a needle that had apparently been pushed through the top of the child's head.

The photographs showed the needles completely embedded inside the boy.

The parents say no strangers have come into contact with him.

Apparently someone posted a comment on wikipedia about his wife's death 13 hours before police found the bodies.

Web Time Stamps Indicate Nancy Benoit's Death Reported on Web at Least 13 Hours Before Police Found Bodies in Her Home

Thursday, June 28, 2007

An anonymous user operating a computer traced to Stamford, Conn. — home to World Wrestling Entertainment — posted an entry to pro wrestler Chris Benoit's biography on Wikipedia.org announcing the death of his wife Nancy at least 13 hours before police in suburban Atlanta said they found her body along with her husband's and that of their 7-year-old son, FOXNews.com has learned.

Employees at Wikipedia.org said the posting went live on their site on Monday at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Police, however, said they found the bodies Monday at 2:30 p.m. EDT.

The posting reads: “Chris Benoit was replaced by [[Johnny Nitro]] for the ECW Championship match at Vengeance, as Benoit was not there due to personal issues, stemming from the death of his wife Nancy.” According to a Wikipedia.org report published after FOXNews.com made inquiries, the edit was reversed just under one hour later with the comment:

"Need a reliable source. Saying that his wife died is a pretty big statement, you need to back it up with something."

The posting apparently was made in reference to Benoit's scheduled appearance on Sunday night at an Extreme Championship Wrestling event in Texas.

An employee from Wikipedia.org told FOXNews.com that he called and left a message with investigative authorities in Fayetteville, Ga., at around 11 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, after the posting was brought to the attention of the St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Web site.

“I chat with other editors on IRC — Internet relay chat — and somebody pointed it out to me on a relay chat and that it came from a Stamford connection, and that it took place at midnight Eastern Standard Time on Monday morning,” said Wikipedia.org volunteer coordinator Cary Bass. “I called and left a message with the police department.”

The computer-generated time and date stamp of the Benoit entry are listed as 4:01, 25 June 2007. Wikipedia.org lists its entries according to Universal Time, also known as Greenwich Mean Time.

Further investigation, according to Wikipedia.com, shows that one hour after the first edit reversion, another anonymous edit by 125.63.148.173 using unwiredAustralia.com.au, a wireless Internet service provider, was made adding about the aforementioned personal issues: "which according to several pro wrestling websites is attributed to the passing of Benoit's wife, Nancy."

That edit was reverted less than 20 minutes later, with the following comment: "Saying 'several pro wrestling websites' is still not reliable information." The second edit was made by a computer in Australia from a wireless network, according to Wikipedia.org.

Investigators so far have ruled the Benoit killings as a double homicide-suicide.

Bass said when there is a high-profile case, such as the Benoit killlings, Wikipedia.org limits postings to registered users, which is now indicated at the top of the Benoit entry. According to the listed history on the Benoit entry, the computer used to post the 12:01 a.m. entry had a Stamford, Conn., Internet Protocol — or IP — address, a numeric designation that is assigned to every computer with an Internet connection, and that same address has been used to post about a dozen other messages on the site, dating back to May 16, 2007.

The seven-year-old male peacock wandered into the restaurant parking lot and perched on a car hood last week. Charmed employees had been feeding it bread when the man appeared.

A restaurant worker says the man grabbed the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started stomping it. She says when he was asked what he was doing, he responded, "'I'm killing a vampire!"'

According to a posting by her family on the Caring Bridge Web site, the drain's powerful suction tore out part of her intestinal tract. (The posting had been removed from the site as of this writing.)

According to WCCO-TV in Minneapolis, the girl's father, Scott Taylor, said the suction from the uncovered drain ripped a two-inch tear in her rectum and "basically disemboweled her by pulling out her small intestine, almost all of it."

Abigail now has a permanent colostomy and will have to be fed intravenously for the rest of her life.

That's one of the worst things I've ever read... in the 'senseless injury' category.

Fed intravenously for the rest of her life, and she's only six years old?

Can't they eventually do an intestinal transplant? I mean, if they can transplant lungs, you'd think they'd be able to do intestines too.

Dinner party guest finds bodies in host's freezer.

Belgian Dinner Guest Finds Bodies of Host's Wife, Stepson in Freezer

Thursday, July 05, 2007

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Police detained a man in eastern Belgium after a dinner guest found the bodies of the host's wife and stepson in a freezer, authorities said Thursday.

The female guest opened the freezer while helping to clear up after a dinner with a group of friends Tuesday at the man's home in the city of Verviers, 78 miles east of Brussels, said Christine Wilwerth of the city prosecutor's office.

"It was a lady who at the end of the meal at a friend's house, and after washing the dishes ... decided to take the leftovers of the meal down to the basement to store in the deep freeze," Wilwerth said. "Once she opened the deep freeze, she discovered the bodies."

Guests alerted police, who identified the bodies of the man's wife and her 12-year-old son. The bodies appeared to have been kept in the deep freeze for several weeks.

Wilwerth said the suspect acknowledged that a domestic quarrel had escalated and his wife had been stabbed, but she said he had not explained the circumstances of the child's death.
