Death Beats Halifax
Interesting story about George Washington’s view of (part of) the Great White North. English Canada got a big kick-start from Americans fleeing the Revolution. Washington’s comments, of course, were likely influenced by bitterness against the Loyalists and frustration that the northern Colonies did not join the Revolution, as the Revolutionaries had expected. I find Halifax to be a great city in a wonderful part of the country. My parents live near Annapolis Royal, in the western part of Nova Scotia. Annapolis Royal is actually one of the oldest municipalities in North America, but it remains a tiny, tiny, town. It is a fascinating, historic little spot, where time has stood still. As for Halifax itself, I realize that some don’t share my positive view. The Barenaked Ladies seemed to have Washington’s opinion, singing the scathing “Hello City” about that town. When there's an eel in the lake that's as long as a snake that's a moray. |

I lived in Halifax for three years when I was going to university. I bloody love that town. If I ever leave the Big Smoke again I have no doubt that'll I'll end up in Hali. Though I imagine it was a pretty nasty town 230 years ago. Christ, Dartmouth is still a nasty town...and the Bedford Basin...yikes.
I was just thinking how much I miss Hali last night. Damn. I'm going to have to plan a trip out there just to go the the Wardroom for a pitcher. |

Good ol' Washington, he called it like he saw it
Forgive my ignorance InactionMan, but just what city is "the Big Smoke?" |

Been to Halifax once. Nice book stores, good food, bars. Would love to go back. I'm sure I will.

Clearly, what was true 230 years ago must be true to this day.
