have not yet had disc in drive when processor wakes from sleep, but drive goes through eject process (can tell by characteristic sound)

is there any reason for this and can it be avoided?

My iBook does the exact same thing... I think it's normal for slot-loading optical drives.

So does my PowerBook 15" 1.33 Ghz.
It is probably normal.

shouldnt be normal guys. It seems to me many apple users are content with anything and apple keeps selling systems with problems because no one really cares. How can you say it is normal. That is not good.

Except that you have no evidence that this is, as you seem to suggest, a hardware (or software) problem, as opposed to expected behaviour.

gdraynal says that s/he has never had a disc in the drive when that happened. So it doesn't eject the disc, it just sounds like it was going it. That's perfectly normal, every Mac makes that noise when it wakes up. It's like a yawn . I guess the drive needs to check if a disc was pushed in while it was asleep.

If my Mac Mini hasn't been used in a while, the optical drive will spin up at random intervals, not only when it wakes from sleep. If I set it to not go to sleep, it's guaranteed to wake me up in the middle of the night by spinning up.

My first iBook and my replacement iBook do it. I think it's the normal sound of the drive turning on.

No, it will not eject the disc. It just tries to read it. If there is a dics in the drive, it will spin the disc, that's probably what you hear.

Yeah, I've tried it with a disc in, it doesn't eject, it just spins up the drive.
