I live on College campus where AT&T service is fairly poor but WiFi is ubiquitous. Once the iPhone SDK is released, what are the odds that a third-party application will let me use my regular cell number to make and receive calls over VOIP whenever I have a weak cell phone signal? If i were able to do this to get around AT&T's crummy service I would switch from Verizon (terrible phones, great reception) so that I could get an iPhone. Does anyone more technically focused than I have any insight as to whether or not this would be a possibility?

Chances are pretty small that there'll be anything that lets you use your cell number to do VOIP. The best you could probably hope for is an app that uses Wifi to make VOIP calls and spoofs your number to one you set. I think the chances are much greater than a Skype-like app will come out.

This is possible, IMO, in a hacking way.

but if the SDK is released than it won't be hacking it could just be a legit program right?
