Holy shit, Batman.
It's gonna sell like hotcakes, especially if it's still a Universal Binary and will run on the G4's and G5's. |

Yeah, I am wondering if it is simply the "upgrade" version of the software. I simply like to have the full version to make things simpler. (If I lose my old copy of Leopard, etc). Have they ever done a specialized upgrade version before? I know the discs that come with new machines are machine specific, but besides that?

I don't think so... Leopard users can upgrade to Snow Leopard. I'm not sure if Tiger users can only upgrade via Mac Box Set which would seem a little silly ($169, even if you don't necessarily want iLife/iWork).

People on Engadget are still complaining about the price, accusing Apple of charging for "service packs" and "point releases." Uh...
1) Every version of OS X is a point release (no OS XI yet, no?) 2) Windows 7 is, contrary to its name, a point release (v6.1) 3) It's a little bit larger than a service pack. Just smaller than a normal OS release...hence the price. People there will complain about anything Apple-related. Apple could make a crime-fighting robot that shat donuts and they'd accuse Apple of skimping on the sprinkles. and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong |

Ah, that's what I figured. Makes sense, I think you'd lose a lot of bloat just by removing all the PPC stuff.

I believe Snow Leopard will be $129 for the few stragglers using Tiger on Intel Macs.....

Performance bloat? No. The PPC binary code sits alongside the Intel binary code, but it doesn't somehow slow down the execution of the Intel code. Also, the executables are a relatively tiny part of the OS. Most of the real "bloat" is made up of images, localizations, NIBs, etc. For example, Preview.app is 70 MB on my system, but only 2 MB of that is the actual executable binary. Love of the PPC Debug Code has clearly slowed PK's mind.

Yes now it's clear. If you have Tiger then you either buy the Leopard upgrade alone or via the Mac Box Set and then toss Snow Leopard over the top. I'm probably going to buy the Mac Box Set family pack and sell my single Leopard license now that Snow Leopard is 29 bucks I easily get somethign for the boxed Leopard. omgwtfbbq |

I wonder if they're going to do one of those Apple Store release party things for this. If they do, I'm SO there.

I couldn't believe this. The biggest surprise of the day, really.
They could've charged $79-129 and people still would've bought it by the truckload. But $29?!? Holy cow, that's amazing. As someone in the AN chat pointed out, Leopard isn't broken but is getting a nice "bump" and enhancement for only $29. Windows 7, on the other hand, is going to be seen by many as a "fix" for what should've been Vista all along...and it'll be full price (I assume). Make a commercial about that, Microsoft. We're getting a kick-ass upgrade to an already kick-ass, solid and stable OS...for $29. Others will pay $100-300 and, realistically, probably won't experience that great of a change/improvement over Vista (not if all those core components and features are still in place). I know where I'd rather be in all this... |

I love some of the RDF bits on the new OS X pages (Icon Refresh Speeds ™).
Best of all they actually USE the word "snappy" WRT to new Finder performance. Not a whole lot of info in new QuickTime, whether it will include pro codecs, etc. Overall a pretty impressive list of improvements though. BTW posting from Safari 4.0 (tabs no longer upside down). ...into the light of a dark black night. |

You know what's coming in September....
"Hi PC, what are you doing?" "Oh not much Mac, just showing off my new Windows 7 operating system..." ...yadda yadda it still sucks / doesn't offer the ease of use of OS X... "So how much does that cost PC?" "Only $399, Mac... pretty inexpensive, eh?" "Well actually PC, all users of Leopard can upgrade to the fully 64-bit wondrousness of the most advanced OS in the world for just 29 bucks." "29 bucks?" ...PC gets forlorn look on his face, kills self.... ...into the light of a dark black night. |

Mo' definitely. If the rest of you guys haven't downloaded the final version of Safari 4 yet, do so. It's faster than a lightning bolt running on Snow Leopard.
