I stopped using Western Digital drives about 5 years ago, because their proprietary software couldn't be expunged and was a pain to deal with on Macs.

But I had no idea someone thought that it would be wise to encode the ability to send a remote command to some My Book Live drives enabling a factory reset.

This seems to be only their cloud-connected drives. But still.

Isn't that like hanging a giant "Please hack me" sign on the internet?

At what point do software vendors need to start paying damages for reckless quality control?

Yesterday?

Can you imagine being told your entire computer-using existence to “back up” (accompanied by all the horror stories of what happens if you don’t)? And then you wake up to find all your shit gone, despite doing the right thing and dutifully backing up?

Normal, non-techie folks, right or wrong, aren’t doing multiple, redundant backups. It’s a miracle some even do it at all. And for those who do and then something like this happens…

Ouch.

“Let me get this straight…if I don’t back up, I risk losing all my stuff. If I do back up, someone else - through no fault or actions of my own - may lose it for me? How about all of you kindly go fu…”.

Right?

We sell almost zero of these stupid things from any manufacturer. We make our own external drive packages, in house, and encourage all of our customers to have one, and teach them to use it if necessary. They're more expensive, but better. And, short of "Oops! I downloaded ransomeware!" we don't ever have these types of issues.

But, to each his own.
