As a non-techie sort of person I came across another thread which encouraged someone to have a look at their Activity monitor. I did and found something called FahCore_65.e taking up 85% CPU at one stage. I'm sure this is the dumbest question I've ever asked in my life but what is that?

Hmm, have to edit this - I've just thought of a dumber question I once asked.

That's Folding@home. It automatically takes up any CPU cycles you're not using and scales back when you do something demanding.

Your last WU was completed on the 22 of Dec. How far through are you on this one?

40%. I'd almost given up on Folding. Anytime I look i've usually done about 0.01 %. So, I'm the reason Applenova is doing so well?
