From my last thread about: IBM taking apple for a ride, people suggest that the current g5 version is being sold to dump off the existing stock.

- Would the 970mp be considered a move to the G6?
- So would the G6 come at WDC?
- Or in the fall?

I do not think so. The 970MP would most likely be a G5 still. The Power5 derivative whenever that is available might get the G6 moniker or the G5+ moniker. The core of the 970MP is practically the same as the original PPC 970 with some small changes. The FX was supposed to be cooler, the GX is faster and has 1 MB of cache, MP is dual core( 2 970 cores) with 1 MB cache.

Yeah...I think the 970MP will be called the "G5 Dual Core." No G6s yet, unless they're from Pontiac.

Whatever happened to all of the "secret" inside info that was so prevalent several months ago? All sorts of significance given to various digital sequences from someone named Mopius or something? It was along the lines of 3.4.4 > three cores in four months @ 4 GHz :-0 This individual was supposed to be an IBM insider with the SCOOP - almost a cult following. As time has borne out - the "inside scoop", well........?????

In my humble opinion, the best name Apple could use for the 970MP would be G5^2 (G5 squared). Not strictly mathematically accurate above two chips, but nobody expects more than two MPs in a box any time soon...

As for Morpheus, he was talking about 6:6:6 - which I think we established was Power 6 at 6GHz in 2006. Of that, the 6GHz looks to be the hardest to hit.

On the other hand, I would be very pleased if the big M could peek over the horizon at what follows the 970MP/GX. Are we likely to see Apple using the PPE core (as used in Cell, and probably Waternoose), or something perhaps better suited to desktop (as opposed to game/media) computing? A Power 5 descendant? And the silence surrounding the low-power laptop chip (testing last year, according to M) has been deafening.

Pip pip!

I simply could not bring myself to buy one if it were named that. Notation is too important to screw around with. Maybe G5x2, and say "gee-five ex two" even though it is "times" two.

What Adobe Updater‽ What‽ What‽ WHAT‽

I'm hoping that there will be an upgrade to the G5 at WWDC. Steve may just surprise us all.

I certainly hope so - maybe a new "professional series". This last "upgrade" was pretty minimal (that is being kind). A lot of anticipation and hype - not much delivered - I think there are some dual cores now shipping from Intel.

I would think that the G6 would be a new concept like a Cell processor.

Dual Core, PCIe, and a new, smaller PowerMac. Am I asking too much...?

Probably, cause a Dual Core, Single Processor, PCIe equipped Mac in a smaller case would sell too well for them to make it and call it a PowerMac...

Wishful Thinking up the Wazoo:
New, smaller, single-processor, single-core G5 "Mac Cube" at WWDC
Redesigned single/dual-processor dual-core "Power Mac G5" at PAE
iMac, Mac Cube to gain dual-core varients throughout 2006

CobaltFire, for what it's worth, I think we'll see PCI-e in the next Power Mac redesign. Probably not in the first-generation "Mac Cube," should we see it at WWDC.

I recommend it be named the "G5 Beeblebrox" because two heads are better than one.

no there wont be

it has been upgraded already this year
there is only one powermac upgrade per year

other than introducing new products such as a power mac G5 3ghz (in november etc. like the 2.5 last year)

so there wont be an upgrade at WDC unless its a power mac G5 3ghz

I don't follow you. You say that Apple won't update the PMs once again this year unless it's a 3GHz?

A 300MHz update is a big update to you?

Actually, strictly speaking, you have two brains. One on the left, one on the right.

At least you are willing to admit to the possibility of a surprise.

i hope so... with apple 'dumping' the old stock we could have the new models at wwdc - the idea does make sense

with xbox chips coming later, ibm could show off their skills with an apple release

i'm growing cynical in my old age... I dont believe we will see updated PM's at WWDC, and the odd's of the mythical XStation are a pipedream thought up by desperate souls like myself. The'll never update standard PM's that quickly. I'm starting to believe some of the doom and gloom articles that were going around about IBM playing games with Apple and Apple being caught between a processor and a hard place. Sory for the bad attitude, it's been raining in Vermont for ever it seems...

We needed the rain here in NE, over an inch precipitation deficit. It's best to enjoy the weather that we have.
