Another rudimentary question that I have.
I was trying to set a password for a folder in my documents. It's basically a bunch of docs from pages. At the bottom it says 'get info' Ownership/permissions read only, write only etc.. How do I set a password for that folder If I dont anyone to look into that group of documents.Or am I able to set a password, can I apply that to other folders aswell. Yes it is my computer and it's registered under my name. any help would be much appreciated. thanks. A mac newbie and I'm spreading the Mac gospel all across the land.haha |

1) It's a multi-user system. There already is a password on all folders inside your Home directory (including the Documents directory): your user account password. You shouldn't give this out to other people for this very reasons. If you want them to access your computer, give them a guest account. If you want them to access files on your computer through the network, also give them a guest account.
2) Use FileVault if you want your entire Home directory encrypted. This normally isn't necessary, though. 3) If you're absolutely sure that you want individual folders password-protected and encrypted, use Disk Utility to create an encrypted disk image from the folder in question, then remove the original folder and mount the image when you need it. Somewhat related blatant plug: why not to hide folders. |
