Hi everyone.

I was just wondering. How long is apple going to stay with "G3, G4, G5" and on and on and on.

I know theres going to be a G6, but how long is it gonna go on.

There isn't gonna be a G20 in 2025, so what are they going to call it?

Thanks

*shrugs*

We definitely don't know, but they're almost certainly going to change their nomenclature soon.

The laptop and desktop technologies are diverging... It becomes tricky to have Dektop G6s and Dual core laptop G4s even if they are equivalent technologies.

Then again, they can always arbitrarily call dual core G4s G5s....

But I'd like a new letter soon.

Is anyone else as shocked as I am that this handle wasn't taken?!

Come on, people! iRobot?!

G = Generation.

It's a pretty solid naming scheme IMO.

And when is Intel going to drop this whole "Pentium" business?

I mean, Pentium, Pentium II, Pentium III, Pentium IV, Pentium M -- sheesh!

It's not like it has name-recognition value or anything like that...

Well true, Brad, but then again, the G series hasn't been stunning the world of late....

And besides, any name changes would probably include the G.

G6 and GMobile. (There are certain problems with trying to trademark GM.... )

Is anyone else as shocked as I am that this handle wasn't taken?!

Great idea! Since mobile and desktop chips are changing why don't we do this; for desktop chips we name it D1, D2, D3, etc and for mobile chips M1, M2, M3, etc.

Apple will probably never going to get rid of the G but, might change it the second part of it. Maybe like for G10, maybe something like GX.

Intel uses the Pentium M name for a very good reason - it's based on the Pentium III, not the Pentium 4. It would look like a downgrade to go from a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 to a 1.7 GHz Pentium III, even though the PIII-based Pentium M at 1.7 GHz is actually FASTER than a 2.4 GHz P4!

Apple has so far been on a pretty linear path - the last time a more modern processor was behind in clock speed compared to the less modern one was in late 1997, when the G3 was new and clocked at 266 MHz, and the 604e (aka the G2) was breaking 300 MHz. But they pretty quickly went all-G3. Everything from the low-end iMac to the high end PowerMac and PowerBook used a G3 by late 1998.

the pentium naming scheme is in need of an upgrade. pentium was supposed to be instead of 586, but they've carried it on... shouldnt it be something like hexium or heptium by now.

I'd much rather see the model number used.

Fuck it. They can call them what they like. Redmond and Intel have added litttle to the world.
