It's big news for Android users.

iMessage isn't going anywhere. However, if an iPhone user communicates with an Android user (as we all do) then the SMS stuff will be less secure, as it is right now. I'm sure Apple will eventually support RCS when communicating with Android, but until then conversations with Android users will be no different than they are right now. It will all work just fine.

So, Android users will finally have something more secure along the lines of iMessage, and text with iPhone users will still be meh. And vice-versa.

Pick your platform, folks.

Yeah, it would be nice if they did play well together. Mrs T gets really annoyed when here texts to friends with Android don't go through.

Maybe.

Google has back-and-forthed so much on their messengers that Apple might be eyeing that for a while.

RCS started appearing on carriers all the way back in 2012 and… hasn't exactly taken the world by storm.

The article makes it seem as if Google has won a political game, advancing their platform through widespread acceptance by carriers.
