First drunk post by drew in 2011. Love it.

Of course if I missed any before this one, I'm sure you good people will soon let me know.

I used to be undecided.....But now I'm not so sure.

Urgh.
This is what I was talking about last night...

In case you can't translate my entry I was explaining how I had poured some rum on a bit of butter pecan ice cream, eaten it, then decided to make a rum and coke in the same mug without washing it out first. The result was, I suppose, like making a "Coke Float". The fizzy cola shot into the trace of cream at the bottom of the mug and foamed up into a very stiff, foamy mass. I'm sure that Billybobsky could explain the chemistry of what transpired. All I know is that I ate/drank most of that crap. Bleccch.

Sampling the same expression of Scotch from different years is especially interesting given the massive rise in popularity over the past couple of decades. Distillers are having lots of trouble keeping up with demand, so much that they are releasing ever younger whisky or diluting it down to the minimum 40% ABV. Laphroaig 10yr is such an example of a whisky that was further cut down to 40% from 43% recently. Using the Laphroaig example again, they had to drop the 15yr expression altogether to keep up with the demand.

Other tricks they use to speed the aging of whisky is to use smaller barrels. Bourbon barrels are smaller than sherry butts. Some distillers are experimenting with even smaller barrels still.

Spotted this article on St. Patrick's day and thought I'd link to it here as it contains some good recommendations in main text and comments.

Bought a bottle of Redbreast for a buddy last year, and both he and I added it to our 'Recommended' lists... not quite Macallan, but unique enough to go out of your way for.

holy hell, mate.

Stiff? So not like a normal coke float at all, in that the foam with coke floats is still liquidy. I don't think any actual reaction occurred, but it is possible that the milk fats and other solids came out of solution when the acidic and significantly less alcoholic coke was added. The evanescence (bubbling) caused the resulting suspension to froth over. As to why it is stiff, the alcohol in the rum may have slowed the precipitation of the fats etc thus leading to a more gradual phase change and larger aggregates when the coke was added, but this is all a guess.

So much whisky tonight, trying to see if I can remember all of them... (bold = shortlist of favorites)

Bulleit Bourbon
Cabin Fever Maple Whisky
Old Potrero 18th Century Style Whiskey
St. George Single Malt Whiskey (Hangar One, not St. George from England)
St. George / Hangar One Whiskey made from Sierra Nevada Pale Ale mash.
Templeton Rye Small Batch Whiskey
Yamazaki Single Malt Whisky
Aberlour A’Bunadh - Cask strength + sherry. So strong it feels like it evaporates off the tip of your tongue.
Amrut Cask Strength
Amrut Intermediate Sherry - Indian sherry matured whiskey, but without the harsh tannic finish thanks to Bourbon-Sherry-Bourbon transfer.
anCnoc 12 Year Old - Sugary, syrupy, delicious with dessert. I had a bite of dark chocolate at the booth next door which made it even better.
Ardbeg 10 Year Old
Ardbeg Uigeadail
Ardmore Traditional Cask
Chieftain's Glenturret 1990
Caol Ila Distiller's Edition
Lagavulin 16 Year Old
Compass Box Spice Tree - Oak Cross on 'roids.
Compass Box “Orangerie”
Dalmore Gran Reserva
Dalmore King Alexander - Almonds, roasted peanuts. Very, very smooth.
Glenmorangie Nectar d'Or
Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban
Isle of Jura 10 Year Old
Johnnie Walker Gold Label
Kilchoman Winter 2010 Release - New distillery, and might just be my favorite single Islay malt.
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Springbank CV
Signatory Highland Park '91 18 Year Old
Los Nahuales Mezcal Joven / Blanco Tequila
The Glenlivet 25 Year Old
Baker's Bourbon
Roughstock Montana Wheat Mash Whiskey
Roughstock Montana Single Malt Whiskey
Roughstock Montana Corn Whiskey

The best part of the night was meeting Whyte & Mackay's master blender, Richard Paterson. He did his entire routine for us (minus the firecracker).

Writer's Tears.

I think you can only get it in Ireland. I don't know a whole lot about whiskey, but I know that I really really like this. A lot. Not knowing any whiskey vocabulary, I'd call it 'bright' or 'clean' or something. It apparently got great reviews in some important whiskey reference. It's a really fine liquid, that's about all I can tell you.

Ale, man, ale's the stuff to drink

Ok I reloaded on some bottles:

Glenrothes Select Reserves (my favorite scotch--everyone should try this)
Cardhu 12 year Old (someone in here recommended it--its ok)
Balvenie 16 year old (always a solid scotch)
Glenmorgie 12 year In Port Casks (very good)

Now that I got a job, I can buy more Apple products!

Finally having tried Ardbeg and Lagavulin, I finally have an opinion to offer about the differences between the major Islays. As far as peatiness goes, Ardbeg is a wet smoke...it comes across as damp soil and how I would expect munching on compost would taste. Laphroaig is more coal and wood ash. Lagavulin is similar to Laphroaig, slightly less peat, smooth and dry at the same time. Caol Ila is lively, effervescent and has the most lingering smoke of them all.

My personal preference would be Lagavulin, Laphroaig then Ardbeg. Caol Ila is different enough to head its own category.

And then there's Kilchoman which I think is very reminiscent of Ardmore (the peaty Speyside). Big thumbs up for these two as well.

New additions:
Springbank 12yr Fino Sherry
Glen Ord 12y (Signatory single-cask bottling)
Glenlivet 16yr Nadurra "Triumph"

Glen Ord, not much to say. Speyside character (though technically Highlands). Sweet, yellow/green fruits, malt. Needs water.

Springbank I have a love-hate relationship with. Every Springbank starts out tasting like burnt matches, rubber, and then some of the best whisky flavors you will ever experience. Cheesecake with berry glaze. Left a bit in my glass overnight to evaporate and there was quite a bit of brown sediment at the bottom.

Glenlivet Nadurra, still sealed.

I was only able to obtain the one bottle, so tasting it will have to wait.

It's basically a standard 55ppm phenol Ardbeg that has been aged for >10 years in new heavily charred American white oak barrels. I suspect the char actually filters out some of the strongest flavors, so it might taste more malty and less peaty. Since the barrel hasn't been used up by another spirit, there should also be plenty of vanilla and honey (sugar/molasses/"sweet") from the wood to go around.

Slamming some Alberta Premium right now.

Funny, I bought it because it's pretty cheap and I like it. I didn't use any of the fancy descriptions the guy in that video uses. I just thought people bought it because it was one of the cheaper ones in the store.

Now I can feel all uppity instead of all trailer trash when I buy this shit? Sweet.

EDIT: Wow, it won Canadian whiskey of the year from 2006 to 2009? Hmm.

BTW, you may remember this rye from my post a few winters ago, when it froze solid on my deck. Fuckin' -40C:

Ralfy is pretty much the most famous amateur whisky personality in the Scotch whisky universe at the moment. He does tend to go overboard in describing the flavor of whatever he's drinking.

I've gone back and forth between high-rye whiskies. The rye really is overwhelming.

Maker's Mark on the rocks. Nothing special, I know, but when it comes to whisky, I'm clueless. My friends are usually the ones who buy me the good stuff.

I opened a bottle of the 12 yr Laphroaig (downstairs), and my wife (who was upstairs) thought I was cleaning auto parts in the living room or something. This stuff is so different it really shouldn't be called scotch. Maybe the gallic word for smoke might be better... By the way, it has taken four years to get through HALF of my bottle.

I bought my bottle of 10yr for my 21st birthday ten years ago and only finished it last year.
