This morning, my friend and former band mate, passed away today due to a fire in his apartment in downtown Cleveland. I just found out about an hour and a half ago and I'm quite numb. None of us have really talked to him since he left the band 1 year ago this upcoming saturday.

I don't know what to say or do because he was a great guy. Got on my nerves and did some weird ass shit, but was always a great friend.

Cleveland, OH - Fire broke out at the 19 Action News Reserve Square building shortly after 6AM Tuesday morning.

The fire was confined to an apartment on the 13th floor where one person was living. Firefighters rescued the man and performed CPR before rushing him to a local hospital.

Brett McDavid died at St. Vincent Charity Hospital.

The coroner says the 27-year-old died from smoke inhalation.

19 Action News has learned McDavid worked as a bartender at Scorchers - a bar restaurant inside Reserve Square.

Firefighters say the fire appears to have been caused by food left unattended on his stove.

19 Action News Studios are located in the basement.

Damn. I have many friends I don't speak to on a regular basis and I think I can sort of imagine how bad I would feel to suddenly loose one of them.

Not nice.

What a terrible loss.

I'm so very sorry, for you, your bandmates, and for all Brett's family and friends.

Such a senseless waste of a life.

He was a great guy. He graduated with his computer science degree and was a bartender and did computer forensics for a law firm. We played about 30-40 shows when he was in the band over the year and a half we were with him.

Our most memorable was a trip we took to New Jersey as a band and we went out and opened for Cowboy Mouth, Dumpstafunk, Hinder, and Finger Eleven in Atlantic City at the House of Blues. We were lucky enough to attend a VIP Playboy underwear party afterwards, haha. We also opened for Cowboy Mouth and Dumpstafunk in Cleveland at the House of Blues.

He was always the first guy to step up in a rough situation when something was stolen or there happened to be drama at a show. He always came up with great ideas and itineraries for the band with no surprise of follow through, ha.

I feel terrible for everyone and his family mainly. Such a waste of an amazing life. Something that should have been avoided. We should find out funeral arrangements tomorrow.

Here is a picture of him from one of tour shows back about 2 years ago:

Sounds like he got the most from life and the talents he was given... sometimes it seems like the people who do that are the first to go in a cruel twist of fate. Maybe knowing he really lived life and took advantage of the opportunities he had can be some solace even though it's still hard to deal with it...

Thanks again to everyone for the words. It's been a weird two days because I'm hurt and numb, but also the reality hasn't quite set in. It started to hit me today when I read his obituary in the paper this morning. I figured I'd go ahead and post it so you can see what a great guy he was.
