Who has the cheapest ink now? My girlfriend needs a printer and before i tell her anything I'd like to have at least a small sliver of knowledge about the whole thing.

Buy chips and get the original catridges that come with the printer refilled.
It's a fraction of the cost.. Here in Thailand, OEM Lexmark cartridges cost more than the printer! If I couldn't refill I'd just ebay the printer and buy a new one when the ink runs out! Go Lexmark.. Yea, my Epson 777 has chipped ink cartridges that say they're out but you can still hear ink swilling around in them! Buying B&W + color refill cartridges cost 1/2 the price of the printer!

I had an Epson during Uni and it was always cheaper to buy a brand new printer than get new cartridges. It's a massive rip off. I can't see how they justify it.

Canon inks are not so expensive, and generic knock offs are even cheaper. I have a canon ip4000, which i love, and recommend canon printers, even though they are more expensive than some of the competition, because they are (in my experience) more efficient about ink usage... Seems like canon is more of a printer company than an ink company (unlike others).

I'n going to start buying ink for my HP at Think4inc since I just spent $100+ just to fill my g86. That is ridiculous for ink and this half-full cartridge nonsense really pisses me off. Same stuff (2 black, 1 color) costs 57 Bucks there.
EDIT: They have a booth at macworld too. They also have great prices on photo paper. |

I always found that HP printers generally have good 3rd party support from ink, and even with the OEM cartridges they last for ages after the utility reports them as being empty.
Overall, my experience is that the cheapest 3rd party carts are Epson compatibles, but all other aspects of Epson printers put me off, particuarly how the ink carts don't have the print heads, so after a while the print heads in the machine get all clogged up and you end up needing a whole new unit. |

Yeah, Canon printers rawk. My parents have had the S600 for 3 years now, and it's really great... ink is so cheap that they don't even bother to refill their cartridges.
Epson on the other hand has been a bitch lately. The Stylus C86 I got free with my iBook had been trouble from the start... I just bought new ink and now the yellow doesn't work. You ask me for a hamburger. |

Another vote for Canon here. HP both sucks and blows, at the same time.

I've got a Canon iP 3000 Pixma printer. It's as good as I'd want. Cost me less than $70 and I use PrintPal ink which is rather cheap.
Epson drove me nuts. Hated the sound and anything but their ink printed the colors way off. |

I have a canon ip3000 as well and it works well. The cartridges are easy as heck to refill. If you get a canon pixma, get one that is at the 1000's level. The new ip4200, 5200, etc (non-1000's level printers like, ip3000, 4000,5000) use newer ink cartridges that have a smart chip embedded on them, unless you don't mind just buying new cartridges each time they run out.
