Anyone else completely unable to get popup notifications to work?

I'm being accused of ignoring them...I'd like to see if there is an issue with them.

Safari Version 2.0 (412)
Mac OS X 10.4 Build 8A428

Pop-up blocking is off.

----
If you are browsing the forums when you receive a new private message, the system can pop-up a notification box informing you of the new message.

[x] Show New Private Message Notification Pop-up
----

Isn't that supposed to open a dialog box that says I have a new PM?

Safari Version 2.0 (412)
Mac OS X 10.4 Build 8A428
Pop-up blocking is on.

Before the page even loads, as you can see, a JavaScript dialog requests my attention as so:

Then, I get one more:

After which I am taken to my private messages screen.

I'll try it with pop-up blocking off, but I expect it'll be exactly the same since these aren't actual pop-up windows but JavaScript alerts.

Yup. Safari does exactly the same thing with pop-up blocking off.

Here's how it looks in Camino:

So, I guess Johnq's Java Security settings or his Java install are to blame...?

Ok, wait. I think I found it.

It only works if you come in to the Forum index page.

I only ever come in via a bookmarked "View Today's Post" link. It never pops up coming in that way.

Nope. It does exactly the same thing when I hit the VTP page.

Furthermore, having come in via a bookmark of "View Today's Post", the pop-up notification will never happen for the latest messages.

Java != JavaScript. They are wholly unrelated aside from the name and the fact that they're both used on web sites.

OK, his JavaScript settings.

Pedant.

Forget it. I'm satisfied it doesn't work on my end. That's all I was concerned with.

Others can think I'm bullshitting them, that's fine.

Keep in mind, though, that it only notifies you once. After that, it stops notifying you until you get another new message, regardless of whether you look at it or not.

I think my current problem is in testing sending messages to myself. If I quit quickly after sending a message, restart Safari and go to the site, it works.

Screw it. You know what this is all about? It all makes sense now.

I always had PM notifications set for OFF. Then I was banned. Then I turned it back ON. Then I was accused of having had it ON the whole time and ignoring them ("Moderator X" had logged in as me or admin and looked at my settings. He saw everything ON, presumed I was lying, sent me screen grabs of my own settings). Of course things were on, I had just turned them on so I could find out why I was banned.

Then I went back to test PM notifications by sending myself PMs. Sending oneself PMs doesn't always produce the popup notification as far as I can see, unless you quit quickly.

My god, I've wasted so much time over this stupid "Moderator X" situation.

PROBLEM SOLVED.

Thanks for your efforts.

I've never been redirected to the PM page. I always get the error that it didn't work because of a pop-up blocker. I didn't realize it was supposed to redirect even.

* Actually, a second Mod (trying to be helpful) had gone into my account to turn on my PM notifications (he says they were indeed off). That explains why when I went in to turn them on, they already were on. (Which then of course made me wonder why they weren't working for me "this whole time"!). I even set them off, logged out and in, set them on, logged out and in.

Anyway, everything is working. Jesus.

- I join AN.
- I turn off PM notfications and emails as I do on any site.
- A year passes.
- Mod A bans me, solely to get my attention for an outside matter.
- I email Mod B, not knowing why I was banned.
- Mod C, trying to help, goes in and turns on my PM and email notifications without my knowledge.
- Mod A also goes into my account settings and sees my settings as being "on", not "off" as I had just told him they were.
- Mod A then screen captures my settings (the ones Mod C just changed!), essentially calls me a liar, offers said screen grabs as "proof".
- I go into my settings, fuck around with them a *bunch*, not sure what's going on.
- I get de-banned (thanks Mod B and Mod C)
- I start this thread describing my *seeming* PM woes.
- Mod C sees this thread, remembers and admits he was the one that fiddled with my PM settings — the ones Mod A accused me of lying about (Mod A: "you claim you don't have PM notification on. Which is bullshit, because I just checked.")

All-in-all a giant clusterfuck (humorous in retrospect, but with much of my hair now pulled out) over something totally unrelated to AppleNova, but all is well.

Definitely some Monday morning mojo going around

If it wasn't such a precision cockup, I'd be mad ...Actually I was quite confounded, at various points. But it came full circle to being funny again and now I'm too weak to care.

Yeah.

My bad. I should have made it clearer that I'd turned your PM's back on. Oops.

Even funnier is that I had absolutely nothing to do with any of this.

Weird.

Well, perhaps you logged in as one of the other mods?

AH HA! It's all so clear now...

Dude, the only time I do anything resembling "mod work" is when I post my Please Die image and lock a spam thread.

I don't give a shit how turned on you get by PMs.

I spent the entire weekend camping, drinking, and eating. No time for geeky computer crap.
