Think about this? An iPod video with a miniHDMI (hey, apple can invent it!) that goes out and plays 1080p content downloaded from itunes to a TV. It could be the ultimate iPod video!! 100gb drive could hold about 8-10 movies...Is the world ready???

They could make a mini-HDMI connector, but they wouldn't have to.

I actually prefer watching movies on my iPod now, obviously an iPod HD is out of the question at the moment due to lack of storage capabilities, but i'll definetly be buying one when the time comes

I have a very hard time such a device could exist due to physical size and power constraints. It would take quite a bit of processing power and power to push 1080p video. That, paired with such a small metalic package would result in a lot of heat and a large battery. I vote no.

...and "8-10 movies" really isn't a lot.
"I have the Lord of the Rings trilogy on this thing!" "Wow! What else?" "Erm...nothing." "That's stupid." "But it's stupid in HD!" and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong |

480x340 would be plenty for watching videos on a 3.4' to 4" screen.

Not only that, what you are suggesting is technically impossible, not unless it's really expensive and gets very warm! EDIT: Though a min HDMI port would be good for displaying photos in HD 720p. SVideo in SD must look like shit! |

For the love of sanity you can't have a freaking ipod HD. Do you have any idea what it takes to play 1080p - or the file sizes we're talking processing power, connection, etc ? don't answer that question. Mr Chuckles the Nipple Monkey 2.66Mac Pro 1900XT and lots of goodies |

My intel mini handles it fine. Now, take away all the front end applications and OS processes hogging up my processor and bandwidth, and I think you can create an embedded OS that has the capability to play 1080p. I guess I am one of the few videophiles who craves MORE HD. Also, you could integrate the dock on 1080p output. The ipod itself could play a 480x270 scaled version in a "proxy" like way on the ipod itself.

why? wouldn't you need an ipod to be like 40"'s plus for the 1080p to be worthwhile

Yeah, this thread really doesn't have a point.

Do you honestly believe the "front end applications and OS processes" are "hogging up [your] processor and bandwidth" when playing video? I hope not.

this could be refuted by the amount of energy it would take to power such a device. the iPhone does have an extremely high resolution display, so that may be as "high def" as you're going to get for the time being.

would something like 640x480, or even720p be possible in such a small device? Just wondering...

Possible, sure. But even at 480p, you'll have a hard time actually noticing the quality improvement. At 720p, you certainly won't (beyond the ever-present placebo effect).
