Is anyone else trying this out?
https://www.getdropbox.com/ I got an invite to the Beta and have a few invites to give out, which may be quicker than signing up on the web site. If anyone else wants to give it a try just drop me a PM. Or if anyone is using it already and has feedback I am interested... Cheers.. That looks really cool. Where do they get all that storage? I assume it will be a fee-based service?

I read the FAQ earlier today, and it has a list of the team (mostly MIT people) and details the fact that they have got some backing from some kind of VT firm.
Apparently their subscription model is similar to *Mozy in that the first 1 or 2GB are always free, and after that you'll pay. *Disclosure : If you try Mozy that link gives me some extra storage on my account. Just don't want people to think I am spamming.. but I do like free storage! Scratt I have been using dropbox for a while. I like it so far. I even transferred an episode of battlestar onto it so that a couple of my friends could watch it (directly through dropbox). It has been very useful for me. If anyone needs an invite just pm me your email.
I have not used mozy but dropbox has a couple of interesting features. For instance you have the ability to retrieve previous versions of your file (so far that has been true for me in terms of powerpoint and word documents). You can also share specific folders with people. Or you could provide the url to a specific file. Uploading is really really easy. I haven't treated it like a backup service, and in my opinion it doesn't seem to be for that purpose either. It just makes access to files across different computers a lot easier for you and other people in your group. |

That looks so cool. Scratt, I just sent you a PM with my e-mail address for an invite. I can't wait to try it out. Including my work machine, my wife and I have three computers (four if you count Windows on my work Mac in Boot Camp). It would be so nice to be able to share files across them easily.

Have replied to all I heard from. There are a few still left.
It is quite impressive so far.. I have just started sharing some work files with people on it.. I'll report back in a few days when I've used it more. ironlung, I did not know it had those features.. They make it sounds even more cool. I must admit it's pretty seamless the way it integrates into OS X right away.. Actually slicker than .Mac / MobileMe. So, it's really, really cool (thanks, Scratt!), but...
I don't like the idea of a closed, proprietary system. Is there a possibility something with similar functionality could be developed with open standards (DAV, maybe)? They do say in their FAQ that it's conceivable that at some point down the line they'll allow customers to install it on their own back-end, which would be a nice step. |

Good to see some alternatives the old iDisk. For f***s sake it hasn't exactly been snappy lately. certainly wouldn't mind some healthy competition in this area.

Now that I've been using it most of the day, it seems pretty snappy. I'm going to see how well it works on my wife's (pretty old) laptop tonight. Hopefully it works well, and we can use this regularly to share files between our computers. Even if I'm the only one who uses it, though, I'm thoroughly impressed.

Been using it for my company files for about two months. Its working really well. Even had a few conflicts when two people edit the same file - DropBox just makes another copy of the file with your username and the date and you decide which ones to keep.
We don't use it as a backup, the dropbox IS the place where we work directly on the files, and because it is an actual local synchronised copy of the files (not some clever ftp mounted volume) it gets happily backed up by time machine just like any other files. Gets 10 out of 5 stars from me. OK, I have given up keeping this sig up to date. Lets just say I'm the guy that installs every latest version as soon as its available! |

Sweet !!! The integration with Leopard is pretty good. I love it so far. It's easy to share public files to non-member account. You can browse picture and all... I couldn't ask for more.
The only missing feature would be a way to share files to non-members but with a password or something... without being completly public. But it's really not that bad. This is seriously impressive. It works just as it should though I'd like a better progress bar when it's syncing files.
