The new de-facto macbook for the masses.

The rounded edges are very visually pleasing to me, they look more rounded than the MBP. It seems to me like the new MB has all the benefits of the MBP without the aluminum, and at a cheaper price point. Good deal.

My gut was right, about no price drops. Still, not a bad update at all.

Now the Air really needs that glass trackpad, though.

This machine looks really ugly to me. Did it get thicker? It looks really, really thick in the images on Apple.com

I like the new roundedness of it. It reminds me of how I imagined the MacBook mini would be

Interesting that they took the unibody concept of the MBP and applied it to the MB - with polycarbonate instead of aluminum.

This looks like a really nice machine. Not that it wasn't already...

It looks like the power connector is different.

This thing looks like it ate a few too many donuts.

It does look fatter, even though it's actuall slimmer ( I think).

But I'm sure the rounded edges makes it a joy to carry.
Very surprised, the price is still relatively high. Greater differentiation without FW and RAM limit, should have seen this priced at $900 USD.

connector looks more like the macbook air one(?), possibly to get around common cause of the wires failing -- the cable looping behind the laptop during most use...

The rounded corners do make the MBP a joy to carry, so I could see that. I like these guys but Apple should have done some better stock photography. It looks like it needs to spend a few more weeks on weight watchers.

guys... firewire is dead.

USB 3 will be out next year, ad hoc wireless may be sufficiently fast for all other transfers.

I found it quite difficult to even buy a fw800 cable last week, the only reseller was apple. belkin didn't even list the product on their website.

it sucks, but i suspect that this light peak adapter is going to make all of the current wired connectors obsolete soon...

True, true.

And I would be *thrilled* if it did. But until it's on the *($@%$ unit, don't drop FW. :P

So as I understand it, this is what happened:

1. Prior to the unibody models, all MacBooks had Firewire.
2. Unibody MacBooks announced, no Firewire, but Apple kept the plastic MacBooks around for those who do need it.
3. Apple shifts things around, brings Firewire back to unibody MacBooks and renames them MacBook Pro. All MacBooks have Firewire, again.
4. Apple redesigns plastic MacBook; now it doesn't have Firewire (even though the much cheaper, just-updated Mac Mini still does).

Coming up next, iMacs get Firewire 400 on midrange models, Firewire 800 on top-end and low-end machines, while MacBooks built on odd-numbered days have Firewire 400 added unless it's a full moon. Mac Mini gets Firewire 3200 before the Mac Pro, but only on the $599 configuration.

Oy. This is the 12" iBook/12" PowerBook G4 all over again.

Now the white MacBook actually has better specs than the 13" MacBook Pro that costs $200 more.

I don't think it's a huge deal. It sort of was with the old unibody MacBook because there wasn't any other options with it (other than the *lower-end* old MacBook) and the idea was that the old MacBook would be phased away, leaving consumers with no FireWire portables. But now the 13" MacBook Pro is only $200 more and let's be real, anybody who even knows what FireWire is is probably going to spring for the MBP anyway. So it's not that big of a deal. This new MacBook is still better than the old one.

Maybe people's wrist rests will stop cracking now.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

FW is hardly dead, oh and USB3 is already out, there are a few devices in the wild already, just no computers with USB3 ports. The newer version of FW is due soon, and I'll be you anything that it will still have a faster sustained speed than USB3.

It's the exact same thickness as the outgoing model - 1.08 inches.

My issue with FireWire is my MiniDV video camera. FW is the ONLY way to import video from it, so when FW dies and I at some point no longer have a working computer with it, all my video will be trapped on the MiniDV tapes with no way to import it.

This. Absolutely.

Target Disk Mode has saved my bacon more than a few times, and always leaves the ThinkPad users in the office jealous and in awe.

Well, then make sure to buy Macs with FireWire. Solved!

Seriously, it's not like this new MacBook is Apple's only laptop, or even their only 13" one.

There's some great pics over on Engadget.
One other thing missing from the MacBook are those rubber feet on the underside of the laptop.
