Apple Store isn't back up yet (at least in the UK) but the ability to have 2TB HDD, 16GB RAM + 2.8GHz Core i7 is very welcome, if expensive

Helvetica is my bitch.

You can also upgrade the 27-inch models with up to 16GB of RAM. I wonder just how much that BTO upgrade is on the Apple Store?

Anyone notice the videos on Apple's website are from the Inauguration?

As in they've been sitting on these products for 9 months...

Hey Roboman, don't get too excited, but the video on the new iMac page features a certain industrial designer (and accent) rather heavily...

Uhg... no Blu-Ray....

I would be sold if either the Mac Mini or iMac had it.

Doesn't look likely in the future either. They really seem to be protecting the iTunes Store.

Spotted on UK site: either they forgot to fill in the phone number, or Apple's web team include narcoleptics

or they realize that blu-ray is a stop-gap measure and that physical media is a thing of the past?

Using a campus iMac now (didn't mean to cause such an, um, controversy - for the record, I don't use tech during class). I used to have one just like this, but suddenly the 17" display seems miniscule! And that chin...it's huge!

I'm totally sold on the new iMacs. There was just something about the glass on the old ones that didn't work for me - they just looked so "heavy," the way the glass still had that aluminum around it, and that big, solid-looking chin... And the roundedness of the glass looked oddly retro, like a fat stripe from the seventies. Now the glass goes edge-to-edge - for real - and it's just straight across the bottom. And, of course, the chin looks even smaller, with these massive new screens!

I can't believe it. A 27-inch, 3.06 GHz iMac for only $1,699!

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

Back in 2007 I speculated that there was a need for a quad-core 30 inch iMac -
Many people said I was crazy, said it was never happen, impossible.

Well there it is. I should work for Apple R&D.

Oh hush. What would you rather have "lacking" on the $1,199 model? Just 2GB of RAM? A crappy TN panel?

The $1,199 iMac is just fine the way it is. Compared to yesterday's model, it has double the RAM, a 400 MHz (!!!) faster processor, a much improved display, and IIRC 180GB more hard drive space, too. Plus a wireless keyboard and mouse - a Magic Mouse, no less - is standard.

I expected some of those things, but not all of them! But I suppose there will always be someone who "mehs" any updates...

Exactly. And I think the operative words here are "back in 2007."

I don't think anybody told you that the iMac would stay dual-core forever and ever and ever. Of course it'll go quad-core, eventually - it doesn't take a genius to figure that out.

They'll go eight-core, someday, too. OMG i AM CLAIRVOYANT!!!

You could hackintosh it for so much less, though, and get a MBP on the side for about the same cash.

Wait, are you sure the 21.5" display is actually that much better? I don't think it's LED-backlit. I think it might still be a TN panel. There are a lot of 21.5", 1080p, glossy TNs you can get for under $200 these days.

Dear Apple,

I woke up 40 minutes ago to find out you have just released the computer I'll be buying next.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

From the tech specs page:

"Built-in 21.5-inch (viewable) or 27-inch (viewable) LED-backlit glossy widescreen TFT active-matrix liquid crystal display with IPS technology"

Not once does it describe the LED backlight or the IPS technology as being exclusive to the 27-incher. And considering literally every other screen Apple makes is LED backlit now, I think it's safe to assume that the brand-new 21.5-inch iMac is. Not that we need to assume, because it says it right there.
