Anyone else who have tried or currently play World War II Online?

Since a little more then 2.5 years back is my favorite game by far WWII Online. No other game has made me as addicted as this game has. And it has, compared to many other games, a very good OS X support too. Patches for Mac and PC comes at the same time, and normally do we see bigger updates with new vehicles and stuff every six to eight week.

Havn't you tried it out yet and you like WWII games do I recommend you to try it out. The game can download for free here. Approx. 200 MB

At the moment is there a 14-days free trail to play on the gameserver, (with the last day to sign-up on Friday the 11th of Mars). There is no single missions, only an off-line "boot-camp" where all equipment can be tested out (strongly recommended).

If you want to try it out should you go to Firingsquad.com and follow the instructions. On that side will you also find a couple of fair reviews on WWIIOL including a good basic "Beginners Guide" for the infantry play.

Just a warning! This game isn't anything like Battlefield1942 or other games similar to BF1942. WWIIOL is all about realism with realistic damage models. Hence WWIIOL is rather demanding, why the player have to be patient or s/he will constantly face instant death without knowing what killed her/him. A general good advice is to communicate with the other players around you, and show as low profile as possible to avoid being fired at.

You will find World War II Online's main site here.

If you decide to try out this game is it a good thing to tune in channel 99 when you log on the gameserver. Ch:99 is monitored by the "Training Corps", one for each each side. The Training Corps consists (in most cases) of very experienced players who is ready to guide new players into this rather complexed and difficult game.

Other then that? Well the map is over 28.000 square kilometers [sic!] and it contains nearly 500 towns and villages to fight over, and several thousand players is on the same server. Compare that to the maps in "Call of Duty" or "Battlefield1942" whos map at the most is never bigger then some 9 square kilometers, at the most, and you can never be more then 32 players on the same server.

Another huge and important difference compared to the above games; a campaign in WWIIOL normally takes two to three months to finish before one of the two sides is declared a winner (the other side has only some 15-20 towns left). Sounds interesting? I hope it does.

A few screenshots taken by different player. Just to give you a felling what's all the fuze is about.

For everyone's information, this isn't spam. This guy posted the same message a few days ago and people yelled at him but... it's actually true. They are discussing the same two week trial offer at Ars. So please don't flame this guy for spam. If you're not interested then just don't bother. I have personally heard that WWII Online is very difficult and disorienting, with a bad interface and no tutorial to get you started. They just throw you in there and you have to learn the controls. So I don't feel like putting in the time and effort necessary to figure it out. Maybe someone else here does though, I don't know.

Thanks Luca.

Yes, WWIIOL is as I hinted in the first post not a game for gamers who believe they are the 1337 in Battlefield1942 or Call of Duty. They will be very disappointed when they enter the world of WWIIOL. The learning curve is very step compare to other games. But luckily is the community in WWIIOL just as understanding and friendly, why most people you run in to will gladly help you. Best way is to join a squad.

Disoriented? Well compared to games with very small maps where you find an uncrossable "border" of some strange nature after a few hundred meters or so can I imagine that people get lost on a gameserver where the modelled world is over 220 km x 130 km (and still no border beyond the modelled world), and where you have a sight of line that is 4000 meter down at the ground, and a sight of line that is 8000 meter from 1500 meter above the ground. Man, you can feel real small, lonely and vulnerable when you are out there in that virtual world.

There is a few reasons for why WWIIOL is quite a difficult game, and it is mainly spelt "Realism". To man a tank is not far from manning a real WWII-tank. You have the driver, the commander, and the gunner, at the minimum. Most tanks has four to five crewmembers. But these three crewmembers is what you shall focus on since they have their own things to deal with and several things to consider during a mission.

Most difficult is it for the gunner: What ammo shall I use when firing at an armoured vehicle compared to when I firing at troops and unarmored vehicles? Where shall I aim when I firing against another tank? All armoured vehicles has their weak spots. If you don't have a powerful gun enough plus some armour-piercing ammo left, or your angle to the target is poor, or you are too far off should you really consider to withhold that shot, or you will give away your position for nothing. And finally the gunner must set up his aim correctly. When used properly will a gunner be able to take out an enemy tank in one (1) shot, and when used inapproriately is it possible to waste all ammo (over 100 shells in some tanks) with no other effect then to see it bouncing off the target.

Besides those "little details" have all tanks their own strenghts and weakness which a tanker need to consider during his mission. Nothing like the tanks in BF1942 who all is very similar and none of them behaves in a realistic manner. The main difference between the BF-tanks is that they have different amounts of "hitpoints", and maybe that some guns draw more "hitpoints" then others. Oh, I almost forgot. They look different too which actually is the biggest difference between them.

All newcomers should utilize the Traing Corps in the beginning
Since the learning curve in WWIIOL is quite step did the developers (CRS) and the two High Commands (organized and runned by the players) decided last summer to set up two "Training Corps", one on each side. The Training Corps – which is runned by players who all have volunteered for its tasks – has two objectives.

First to always monitor channel 99 on both sides to be there to assist anyone who have questions about how things work and give n00bs an introduction to the game and its most important features (on ch 99). Within this objective lies also to organizes classes twice aweek on the training server for those players who wishes to attend.

The second objective for the Training Corps is to train Officer Candidates who which to enter the two High Commands; Allied High Command and Oberkommando der Wehrmacht. The Training Corps is responsible for the first four weeks training before the Officer Candidattes enters the branch of their choice where they have to go through a few more weeks of branch specific training.

So there is plenty of people who will help any newcomers to WWIIOL as soon as they ask for help on channel 99. This is also the best way to get into this game fast since WWIIOL is all about cooperation, communication, and organisation among the players. Those who is best organised wins the battles. Depending on the defenders numbers do you need to be 40-80 players when attacking a small town or village. The big city's like Antwerpen and Brussles* can take days to capture, hence they can involve thousends of players before they falls or the attackers withdraws. Most battles involves some hundred people on each side during a couple of hours before they ends.

Anyone who believes he or she can make a huge difference on its own in battles like these is definitely in the wrong game.

*Citys like the ones above is bigger then most "maps" in other games.

Only if you enjoys it.

Call of Dutys single missions is the best I ever have played. Very intense. The online version didn't cut it for me though.

Something about Call of Duty made me sick. Literally sick. Its the first 3D game to ever do that to me. Its odd because I used to play MOHAA online all the time and there is not really to much of a difference between the two.

Oh I think there's a big difference in the graphic quality and the physics of the game. I can see how COD might make you a little woozy if you got too zoned out staring at the screen. MOHAA is much more flat in terms of how the worlds look, move, spin.

...into the light of a dark black night.

I started playing WWII a couple of years ago when it first came out for Macs and I've not stopped yet.

In th two years I've been playing the graphics have vastly improved with another upgrade due in the next few weeks (April 2005).

But what makes the game unique is the game play. No other game can offer such a variety of roles all combining towards a single goal. You can be a destroyer captain, a tank commander, a fighter pilot, long range bomber, various infantry roles, the list goes on and on.

There's also a well established squad system that binds players together. The squad that I belong to, 40 Commando, specialises in hitting enemy airfields and bridges many killometres behind the front lines. We either load up a truck and drive or fly in using transport planes.

But be warned, WWIIOnline isn't for the rambo type player. Those sorts of players usually die within seconds, never seeing what killed them. They just can't hack the very unforgiving kill system. As in real life, one shot and you're dead. There's no power ups or health packages to make life easier.

But give it a try and you'll be well rewarded.

Gone.

Don't anyone bring up the WWII "deal" again. Free initial offer or not, I still define it as spam because it's a ploy to profit from soliciting our forums.
