Very interesting read, suggests that Depression actually benefits mental ability.

I do find that some of my best ideas come in moments of total despair.

It is an interesting article. Most truly great artistic types, and I am not counting myself as a truly great one but I do fall in the creative category, are almost self destructively critical of their own work.

Well I know I am. To the point that I can scrap projects simply because I am not happy with them, when others say they are just fine. And the whole thing is rooted in a form of depression which grows up around your own work.

This depression is a double edged sword in that it can inspire you push harder to achieve, but it does take it's tole on your psyche.

Perhaps that is why so many truly talented people are also very troubled, and I in turn am marginally troubled!

The argument that it's perhaps not a great evolutionary trait is a bit bogus in my opinion as we're not all running around trying to procreate all the time, so some other facets should come into play in evolution from time to time. Even if it's only once a day for men.

I generally have found great creativity during:

1) spells of depression
2) when trying to impress a girl
3) #1 and #2 are often connected

Same here. My most effective motivator is a soul-crushing deadline. I have terrible anxiety about my work (I'm sick most mornings before heading to the office), but an impending deadline for a major project almost always sparks my best ideas. Usually I even have enough time left to get the job done.
