I just installed it and it told me that I had to upgrade to Quicktime 7.0.3. So I guess that's coming out as well.

Nothing too different, except for a video section, like the podcast section.

Post your thoughts here...

Nice. It shows your videos listed on a black background with a reflection, like iChat AV. I think that's the biggest difference initially, though I'm sure that there are more. Hopefully, since they decided to jump one whole version number. You'd hope they didn't just do that because they added the videos section! I look forward to poking around and taking a look...

Well, if it's DivX 4 or newer, then it's basically MPEG-4, so the iPod might be able to play it.

Because Divx isn't an open, voted on, collaborative standard like MPEG-2, MPEG-4, and H.264? It was a bastard version of MPEG-4 that wasn't compliant and should have been stillborn, but nooooooo.

DivX 3.something was, yes. DivX 4, 5, 6 are all standards-compliant with MPEG-4, though, to my knowledge.

you can store videos in iTunes, since they started bundling them with new releases.

The movies are 320x240...awful in other words. I have no doubt this res restriction was demanded by the studios.

you don't think it's a limitation of the iPod's hardware and therefore Apple didn't see a need to provide higher res content?

I find it hard to believe studios would argue better quality music videos and tv shows when they weren't really selling them yesterday anyways. now they are making money off of them

Yeah, iPod screen = QVGA = 320x240. They probably wanted to make the video downloads as small as possible while encouraging people to get video iPods, since it seems as though they really want you to buy the new music videos specifically for watching on your iPod.

Interestingly, just yesterday NPR had a short feature about a band that released their new album on a video DVD - it consisted of 14 music videos, one for each song. I wonder if they'll make it to the iTMS as well, in the same format?

ok they need to be able to rip dvds to be able to put in itunes and on your ipod, not unlike a cd. also, there is no like to the videos from the artists' page. you have to go to the stupid 2000 videos thing. and yes better quality would be good. then you can make mix dvds like cds. its cool and all, but it needs some time to improve to make it truly usable.

You know what I find funny?

A few days ago, Luca laughed off somebody on Speculation and Rumors for suggesting that we might see iTunes 6 today. (iTunes 5 was released only about a month ago.)

I laughed because I thought it was ridiculous to expect an iTunes 6 barely a month after iTunes 5 came out... especially since iTunes 4 was around for several years. Guess I was wrong. Though iTunes 6 really deserves to be called iTunes 5.1 anyway. The only reason they changed it to iTunes 6 is because they wanted it to coincide with the year 2006, and this is probably the most major update to iTunes we'll see in the next six months to a year.

Yeah, Apple has totally lost its mind when it comes to this whole iTunes thing. The bizarre version numbering has to be symptomatic of bigger issues.

has anyone noticed that the video store is down?

anyway...

the reason they made it 6.0 is so that in iLife '06, most apps will be at 6.0 rather than having iTunes look like it's lagging behind

Agree that it's plain odd. iTunes 4.x lasts from May 2003 to September 2005. iTunes 5.x lasts from September to October 2005. Strange.
