Great post Rock... good information is what this debate needs, and you're trumping the uh, cynics' arguments (no pun intended) pretty well. The volcanism bit and "oh btw Mr. skewed statistics gets funding from Exxon" are good examples. It's amazing to me how consistently the scientists who are nay-sayers, all have relation to or some funding from a giant oil or energy company. It's uncanny and frankly a little surprising. I thought I would at least read about a small group of scientists who had no ties to big energy companies but so far I have not encountered such a group in my readings. Every single scientist who says "it's a myth" or "it's out of our control, we have no effect" -that I've seen- has ties to big energy companies.

I mean frankly, if I were a scientist, knowing how important impartiality is, and my workgroup was funded by a big oil company, I would simply remove myself from the running in that field because how could anyone who doesn't know me personally, not question my motives? It's like a lawyer recusing themselves from a trial. They may in fact have no ill motive, but the mere connection they have to the case that could lead a person to logically question their motives, is enough. These scientists who have access to energy company funding, should recuse themselves and/or be very up front in every public rebuttal they make, that their working group or whatever, gets funding from oil / energy companies.

Well we're due for our first snow since early Decemeber, this weekend... good news for farmers if it actually materiliazes, but whatever it ends up being, we'll still be way below avg.

Quote:
Spells of snow and sleet--the first Friday night and a second later Saturday--precede the main event, which may begin precariously close to or just beyond the Bears playoff game Sunday. This storm would end the longest snow-free winter period since 1899-1900.

Light wintry mix this weekend with temps around 35ºF. Some snow showers and highs in the teens next week!

I just left a foot of snow in Syracuse, there had better be some here soon.

Yep. We had the european equivalent of a hurricane today. The strongest storm in 4 years in mid-winter (this is not normal . The strongest gusts were over 130 km/h which is pretty exceptional over here.

In Holland al train traffic was suspended and despite warnings we had a total of over 400 km of traffic jams. Most people were sent home early by their employers (me included). When I came home, I found one of my windows blown out.

I work in a very modern 15 storey building. On the upper floors one could easily feel the wind moving the entire building.

A black hole is where god divided by zero.

Quite mad weather: the highest winds in the UK since 1990. Winds were gusting to 99 mph (159 km/hr) in some places, and almost 80 mph in London. Emergency service sirens battled with the shrieking wind for supremacy all day. My street (I live on a hill in East London) looks like a war zone: debris everywhere, bins in the middle of the road, bits of roofing and signposts leaning against cars.

I guess this was a particularly severe European windstorm.

Car crashes on icy streets. I wanted to find a clip of that one car on the news last night, that just kept sliding and crashing into cars, streetlights, more cars... just endlessly. Omg! It was pretty effing incredible! The news kept replaying it over and over... because no one could believe what they were seeing.

But this is what I found - with a few people desperately hanging out of their car, digging their heels in, trying to keep the crash from happening...

Cop car crash in bad weather. Yikes!!!

More... from BBC

Quote:
Australian wildlife officials warn that a serious drought is driving tens of thousands of snakes into urban areas. Many venomous reptiles are moving into residential and business areas in search of moisture.

[...]

Many parts of Australia have been hard-hit by the drought, described as the worst for more than 100 years. Experts have warned that an army of snakes is on the move, looking for water. Driven by extreme thirst they have been discovered in gardens, bedrooms and even Australian shopping centres.

Not just about temperature and melting ice, but the re-distribution of seasonal precipitation patterns in various parts of the world... of course any one of them could be pointed to as an aberration. But once you start collecting enough aberrations in a short time period, one begins to wonder.

Note to self: scratch any vacation plans to Australia in the near future.

I didn't know there was a snakebite kit industry, but if you're going to watch the Thunder down Under, at least buy a kit.

I am constantly amazed at the number of people in this country who somehow get the concept that they cannot walk safely on ice, but who nonetheless try to drive on ice. Every time I see something like this -especially in places other than the deep south, where I expect people to drive like numbskulls when it's icy or snowy- I want to stamp a big "WTF is wrong with me?" on their forehead.

YOU CAN'T DRIVE ON ICE. ICE ≠ SNOW! HAVING 4WD DOESN'T HELP.
DON'T TRY TO DRIVE ON ICE, OR YOU WILL DAMAGE YOUR CAR AND PROBABLY WORSE.
SLEEP AT THE OFFICE IF YOU HAVE TO, PHOTOCOPY YOUR BUTT AND HAVE FUN, BUT DON'T DRIVE!

This concludes today's PSA.

Reports of this were featured on the news over here. Lot's of death's attributed to that storm, including ones involving things falling on little kids. This sort of stuff worries me as much or more than the mild temperatures. A lot of predictions of global warming indicate that we will get lot's more of these extreme storms. The west coast of Canada, for example, has had one after another since the late autumn.

Smart Bet ^ . Unless there are spikes on the tires, the Rover is going to get hosed every time. ICE + tire rubber = accident claim.

Yeah, I can kick snows ass with my Trooper, as long as it's in it's version of 4WD, because if it's not, I have about as much control as I would after driving it off of a cliff. I am not too confident in it's ability to control on a surface with super low friction

It's picked up in intensity over the last hour here. Should be a fun game. Not looking forward to driving though. There's always some idiot who isn't paying attention / spinning his wheels in the middle of an intersection. Which brings me to today's PSA:

IF YOU'RE DRIVING ON SNOW-COVERED ROADS, EVEN WITH AN UBER-4WD VEHICLE, ACCELERATE *SLOWLY*, AND BREAK *EARLY* AND *SLOWLY* WHEN YOU COME TO A STOP SIGN. SLAMMING ACCELERATOR / BREAK PEDAL IN SNOW = NOT TEH WIN.

Thank you, that is all.

We got our first snow of the winter overnight. I walked for a bit earlier, and it looks like we got about four inches total at the most. It looks very pretty, but the roads are kind of a mess, which brings me to...

That's exactly whey I'm not driving anywhere right now. I'd like to go get some snacks for the games today, but when I got up this morning and walked toward my car, I stopped dead in my tracks and just walked back up to my room when I got to the door and saw the snow coming down. Driving in snow? No thanks. 88.5 Escort in the snow FTW? Nope.

Yep, right now, 2 degrees F outside (feels like -13F).

Not cool. I have to wear a stupid suit tomorrow for a 9AM presentation and it's going to be a cold ass walk through campus.
