I updated both iPhone 4 and iPad2 3G to iOS 5 okay. But when I tried to update my iPad1 3G, I got this error: "The iPad "iPad1_3G" could not be restored. An internal error occurred."

I googled it and tried to put it in Recovery mode in iTunes, all it does was to restored it back to 4.3.5.

I tried many times without success. Why? This has never occurred before.

I'm on Lion 10.7.2 and latest version of iTunes. This iPad 3G has never been jailbroken ever.

This is weird since my other iOS devices got updated without a problem.

Other claims that putting it in airplane mode fix the problem

Wow, thank you. Putting it in Airplane mode indeed worked!

Same problem here. Trying the "Airplane mode" bodge. Not an auspicious start to this "PC-free" existence!

Failure, even with the iPad in Airplane mode.

Trying again.

Seems that the issue is a "verification with Apple's servers" problem, so it's hit and miss. The airplane mode thing probably makes no difference. I'll try once more then give it a while. It's a very un-apple-like cryptic error message, though. "An internal error" rather than "we cant reach the verifaction sever". Makes you think it's a hardware problem.

My phone updated just fine.

Yep cant update, can't even "restore".

Now I get a "cannot contact the iPad update server" error. Too much demand.

It doesn't help that iOS5 being released made second top news story on the local radio this morning - more than just geeks are aware of this now. It's weird, this niche of ours, and how public it's become recently.

Putting it in Airplane mode will work. The error you got was because too many people trying to update at the same time. I got that error a few times, then it got through.
