Sure, but the bigger gains are in frequently-accessed files, such as those of the OS. A 500 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD option may well be cheaper than 1 TB SSD + optical drive. Do keep in mind that this means managing two disks and figuring out what goes where, or alternatively possibly hacking it to use Fusion Drive, giving you one big, rather fast drive.

I am NOT smart enough, nor diligent enough to do Fusion.

Moving my work files to a non-OS disk seems attractive for some reason, and using an old-fashioned HDD instead of a SSD would certainly offer a cost savings!

I had not considered that possibility in the slightest.

Would there be any throughput advantage to having the 1TB file storage drive internal, versus an external Thunderpoot drive?

Thunderbolt is pointless, performance-wise, for a single HDD (it becomes useful with SSDs or RAIDs of HDDs). USB 3 is more than fast enough, so if you want to go that route, get an external USB 3 disk.

Ah, I don't think my early 2011 MBP has USB3, so it'd be FW800, which is pretty good I suppose.

In my shopping cart I currently have:
  • memory upgrade kit
  • data doubler with 7200rpm 1.0 TB drive
  • 480GB Mercury Extreme 6G SSD
  • an enclosure kit for salvaging the internal optical drive

Anything else I should consider before clicking the SPEND MONEY button?

Aside from picking a better SSD, I cannot think of anything.

Is the 1 TB hard disk drive an HGST Travelstar? They are by some margin the quietest and smoothest-running 7200 RPM drives, probably the most reliable, and among the fastest too (not that there’s much choice left today). I would insist on a Travelstar for your notebook use.

What's your best, the Samsung EVO?

Somewhere in here has been mention of the OWC SSDs having better TRIM... hasn't there?

Here's a story I found about the TRIM issue and Sandforce, but I haven't drilled down into this to really understand the difference yet.

And there doesn't appear to be a 1TB TravelStar with a 9.5mm profile (which I need in order for it to fit into the OWC Disk Doubler.

Here's a neat side-by-side comparison of an OWC and a Samsung (putting this here for others who are interested in moving to SSD).

EDIT: Their comparison chart had incorrect data, I had to go to the manufacturer's website for data sheets.

Take it in to Apple ASAP and get it checked, that's all I can say.

I took it in today and the Genius decided that it does in fact need to go into the shop.

I have a few projects to wrap up so I brought it home and will take it back in when I find a stopping place to accommodate a 2-3 day downtime.

I'm curious, it's apparent that the entire motherboard must be replaced, but do you think they keep enough in stock to handle these sorts of replacements or might it be a motherboard from a later machine? It's my guess that the innards change from release to release, to handle different specs and updates.

Just curious if there's really any way to know...

The GPU is soldered to the logicboard, so GPU failure means replacing the entire part.

Apple keeps parts in stock for several years, at least long enough to cover all AppleCare units. I wouldn't expect parts for 2011 units to disappear until well into 2016-17. In other words, don't expect a free upgrade.

LOL!! Thankfully I have not fooled myself into believing any such fantasy!!

Before I take it in for repair I may wipe the drive and install Mavericks.

I expect that I can pull everything necessary in from my SuperDuper backup when it comes home.

MAN, but I'm glad that this happened before I began replacing drives and such... I would have been convinced that it was due to something I'd done during install.

MAKE SURE you back everything up and have the stock hdd and RAM. I sent mine in for a logic board replacement and they wiped the hdd then refused to do the replacement because of third party upgrades until I put the originals back in. Needless to say, I wasn't happy.

Well folks, you've been so patient and helpful.

My laptop is fresh back from the shop.

It's time to get back to the original project and I wanted to run this past y'all.

The good news is that Apple installed Mavericks on the internal HDD of the laptop, so I'm thinking that the easiest route for me to follow is to just clone the internal HDD in this machine to the SSD (I will check to see if the SSD fits into the enclosure that I bought to receive the laptop's original HDD).

Once I have the internal HDD cloned to the SSD I will make the physical swap of the drives.

The next step will then be to run Migration Assistant using the backup of the laptop from last week to pull over the files that I want to have on the SSD.

I plan to move ALL the project files to the 1TB HDD I'll be moving into the optical drive bay. Along those same lines I think that I should relocate my iTunes library to the 1TB drive, leaving the SSD to be devoted purely to the OS as much as possible.

Does all of this sound like "the way to go"?

Thanks!

Too late, you turkeys.

The RAM is now at 16GB.
The SSD is now the primary drive, running Mavericks.
The optical drive is out, the new 1TB drive is in.

Now all I have to do is run Migration Assistant and pull over mah apps and organize my files for clients.

INTERESTINGLY I found LOTS of dust in the machine, lots of parts that were covered with detritus.

It makes me worried that they didn't actually replace ANYTHING.

I suppose there's no way for me to know.

Anyhow, that's the report of this upgrade.

Thanks for playing.

This misunderstanding on my behalf has been mended.

It's doing it again.

Any clue on how long they warranty their repair work?

What a pisser.

I've been pondering things and realized that I'm incensed the machine didn't last 4 years. Wrote a short email to Tim Cook asking him how long I should expect a machine to last, pointless I realize.

What I did NOT say in that email is if my next Apple doesn't last more than 4 years I will be getting a frikkin' Windows box.
