I have both and I think both are listed in iChat and which is getting used, how do I know. And do you need an AIM or .mac account to use local network chat.

Please undo my confusion

iChat -> Preferences -> Accounts. What's listed by AIM Screen Name? That's what's being using.

No, you don't need either an AIM account or a .Mac account for the local Rendezvous chat. Rendezvous uses your username on your computer as the username for the chat.
