I have an external drive that is noisy and it has to be inactive for a while before it spins down. What I would like to do is write a script that detects if the drives is mounted, if it is, the volume will open in a new finder window. If it is not it, will mount the disk and open a finder window. Writing the script isn't really a problem.

However, I want this script to act as the icon for the volume, mounted or not, on my desktop. While the volume is mounted I would like to be able to see it in finder windows, but I do not want the drive to show up on the desktop (duplicate icons for the same volume). I know I can accomplish this by editing the finder's preferences, but I still want to see any CD, DVD, or iPod, that I mount.

Is there any way of making it so that this drive mounts, but is not displayed on the desktop?
